| [Help] Wireless card can't connect to network I recently moved into a place where Wireless internet was provided. It is being provided by a D-Link router, the next room over from mine. I have a Gateway computer, running Windows XP, and have purchased a Belkin Wireless G Desktop Network Card. My problem is that I can't seem to get a connection with the correct network. My card is installed properly and running, and when I scan for networks, I see all kinds of other people who foolishly did not set up password-encrypted networks. I can connect to some of the other networks just fine (although they are rather slow). I click connect and instantly get a connection.
But if I try to connect to the network that I should be on, I don't have as much luck. In the Belkin Wireless Utility window, it lists that status as "Scanning..." It stays this way for quite some time, but after several minutes, announces that it has made a connection. Signal strength will appear strong, and everything will look great, but I can't actually go anywhere on the internet. I pop up Internet Explorer, and it fails to find a web page. I open AIM, and it can't seem to connect. Why would this be?
I've tried to see if I can go to the router's configuration page, and can't seem to do that, either. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated. | |

| Re: [Help] Wireless card can't connect to network Does the network to which you connect have encryption enabled? If so have you set up the correct encryption key for that network?
Does the router implement MAC address filtering as an added security feature? If so, the "owner" of that router may need to add your wireless card's MAC address into the list of authorized clients.
Once connected to the router, go into a command prompt and type the command "ipconfig /all". That should show you the IP address settings the router assigned. If you are connecting to the router and getting a valid IP address, it should look something like 192.168.x.y.
Also... a word of advice. Don't use the belkin utility to manage your connection. Set up windows XP to allow its built-in WZC to manage the connection. If you uninstall the Belkin client and drivers, you should be able to just install the network drivers by using the Windows Device Manager. Then configure your wireless network connection properties by selecting the option to "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings".
