Re: [Vista] Call for assistance - Vista FAQ

Have been using Vista Ultimate for over 30 days now. The more I use it the more impressed I am. A few observations:
PPPOE in XP is sort of hap hazard. Vista finds detects and sets ALL Internet connections that I have tested 100% automatic.(PPPOE Vista is much faster than PPPOE XPSP2) It ask only log-name and pass...Speedboost works very well with Flash Memory..Just tested PNY 1G Flash. not compatible - modified the reg to allow use. Found almost a 21% increase in speed on Transfer of large files. ( ripped a 4.35G program).
Free AV by Avast works really GREAT..Vista Fire Wall is a (No brainer to use), and my list of HowTo for Vista is not very big-in-reference to XP about the same time it is SMALL, and everyday more drivers are added to Vista's Data base. Recommend at least you TEST Vista, dual or triple boot is very easy..and "Vistabootpro" is a GREAT assistance, and "FREE".

Agreed.

What version are you using? 32 or 64 bit?

I'd like to help if possible. I have been running the betas since early on and I have had the RTM code installed on my primary machine for a little over a month. I signed up for Technet, so I had the final release early...

I have Windows XP Pro/Home currently Installed and i want to Install a version of Vista aswell. Can i install more than one Operating System.

WARNING: BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA BEFORE TRYING TO PARTITION OR DO ANYTHING TO A HARDRIVE DRIVE

Yes, this can be done but does take time and effort along with purchasing/allocating some software.

1. The first thing you want to do if you don't have multiple hard drives is to resize your current hard drive to let's say 50% its size.
2. To do this you will need a program such as partition magic 8. I have used it and it works very well.

Actually your Vista DVD can shrink your hard drive partition without using any third party programs.

When you boot your Vista cd and get the Install screen, their is an option to repair the computer all the way at the bottom. It will do a search and a window will pop up.
Ignore any message there and press the [Next} button.
You will get a menu with Command Prompt being one of the menu items.

Select Command Prompt

Then select the drive where your CD Disk is at. (In my case it was drive D, so I put D:)

When in D: type CD Boot

Type in Diskpart

In Diskpart, Type in List Disk

You should then see your full partition.

Type in Select disk 0

Now type in List partition

You should see Partion 1

Type in Select Partition 1

The next command is Shrink

The program will now show you how much you can shrink your C: drive. Mine showed 23 gigs. This was because I had some unfragmented files at that far end and it would not shrink past that point. I recommend defraging your C: Drive before you try this.

Now to set that new partition, type in

Shrink desired=23000 or whatever equivalent you got.

If the shrink says you have 34 gigs type in 34000

The new partition is set, and you exit the usual way by clicking on the X at the top right of the window.

Click on the X again at the next window to return you to the Install option.

At the install option you will be able to choose the new partition to install Vista.

The dual boot will fix itself and you are ready to go.

It sounds complicated, but is actually very easy.
Microsoft will talk you through it if you give them a call.

Question: Why when I played a game is it not showing in the Games folder that I launch from the Start Menu?

Answer: In the rare case a game does not auto-populate in the Games list (i.e. Serious Sam 2), you can drag the .exe from your Program Files into the Games window. It will create a shortcut, give you all the same customization and functionality on right click, and look like it was put there automatically to begin with.

What is Vista?

I haven't seen it mentioned. One big difference between vista and previous versions is what happens when you try to do a dirty(repair) install or a parallel install.

A repair install as we know it in XP is not an available option. You can however do a clean installation on the same partition without losing any data. When installing to the same partition Vista will create a directory names Windows.old and will store the current Windows, Program Files and Users directories there. It will then do a clean install of Vista. Any other directories in the root of the drive will be left alone. You can then retrieve any important files from Windows.old and delete whats left over. Basically a parallel install without the mess

Previous versions, the ability to easily retore a file after accidentally changing or deleting it.

The Windows Recovery Environment, successor to Recovery Console is much more powerful. The ability to run system restore on a machine unable to even boot to safemode w/ command prompt, regedit, a very powerful automated startup repair, memory diagnostics and full pc restore (only with Ultimate I believe though I could be wrong)

Not sure if it has been mentioned but home networking has been made idiot proof yet very functional at the same time. Password protected sharing is the default when sharing from anywhere other than the 'Public' folder. You have a drop down list to choose users who already have accounts as well as an option to create a new user.

The wireless utility now has the same options found in third party applications to assign a location to any wireless network - home, work or public and adjusts file sharing accordingly.

Parental controls is another one that I'm sure would be good to have in an FAQ. Easy to user, powerful and full logging. Set time restrictions for use of the PC, set restrictions on games by either rating or by blocking or allowing specific games. Same goes for internet as well as the ability to block file downloads. Also the ability block or allow specific programs from being run on the PC.

Potentially useful FAQ: I am using Vista Business Edition- 32 bit. Learned the hard way that settings in Vista, settings for Environment variables may be a more sensitive issue than they were in XP.

I installed Norton 360 under Vista and had a bear of a time getting Norton to successfully update itself. (Long story - - There is a posting on this in the Security Forum). Based on advice from a forum reader, I changed my environment variables settings for TMP and TEMP back to c:\windows\Temp. Once that was done, Norton 360 updated itself correctly and settled down.

I had previously been accustomed to setting my TMP and TEMP variables to point to a Temp folder on a different partition then C. This may not be as advisable under VISTA as it may have been under XP and 2000.

this is not recommended, but after all, it IS your pc.

You can get rid of those by following the steps below (WARNING: This will disable most of the Windows Vista’s new security features):-
Go to Control Panel.
Click Admin Tools.
Click System Config.
Click Tools.
Disable UAC.
