What are the typical steps that are needed once Vista has been installed?

"Notification Icons" selection in Taskbar and Start Menu greyed out and icons missing from Notification Area(aka System Tray) in Vista?
Open Start Menu, type "regedit"(without quotes) in Search and hit Enter.
Open RegEdit.
"Find" iconstreams.
Delete ALL Keys with "IconStreams" and "PastIconStreams".
Repeat until no more are found.
Restart.
Go back to Taskbar and Start Menu, recheck boxes as needed/wanted.

Sometimes things go awry and just don't quite work correctly in Internet Explorer 7. One of the first avenues of troubleshooting is to run Internet Explorer without add-ons (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)) to see if doing so resolves issues.
Security and privacy programs such as Sypwareblaster, Spybot Search & Destroy, IE-Spyad, and others add sites to Internet Explorer 7's Restricted Zone. Running IE7 with No Add-ons removes those protections. Remember to re-enable those protections after troubleshooting or resolution of the problem!
Just a word to the wise as it's happened to me.
