[TV] Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia Coming to Fios TV !

No known date yet, but Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia is coming to FIOS TV. Both the SD and HD versions will be available and it will be treated as a premium channel. Below are Jwhip's comments from avsforum. You have to assume that it will be available eventually in all areas that currently only have it on cable. Some good news for Flyers, Sixers and Phillies fans.

"Well, I have been able to confirm with Comcast that both the SD and HD versions of CSN Philly will be carried on FiOS here in Tredyfrin Township. They will be carried as premium channels although I have not been advised what the cost will be for them. I will have to get that info from Verizon."

Thanks for the info.

Forgive me for sounding cynical, but I'll believe it when I see it. Can you blame me?

This post got me thinking (and googling), so I came up with something else about CSN/Philly. This is from an recent interview with Comcast's Steve Burke:

"TVP: Speaking of RSNs, why has Comcast withheld Comcast Sportsnet from DIRECTV and (EchoStar's) Dish Network? Will Comcast also withhold CSN Philadelphia from Verizon's FiOS service as well?

SB: Comcast SportsNet in Philadelphia is not required to be made available to satellite, but we do make it available to other cable providers, including RCN and SMATV providers, both of whom compete directly with us. We’re also in discussions with Verizon to carry the network."

This is great for Philly residents. Heck, if FIOS beefs up their lineup a bit more (SD and HD) and gets a viable DVR in their fold, I could move back from DISH!

Things I think Verizon's FIOS TV needs to be competitive.

Sports Packages:

NBA League Pass
NHL Center Ice
MLB Extra Innings
MLS Direct Kick
ESPN Full Court/Gameplan (supposedly this is already on FIOS TV in certain areas but not ALL)

SD channels:

CSTV
NBA TV
AMC
Fuse
WE
IFC
FSNY & MSG Network (for NY DMA)

HD channels:
INHD (for Versus HD games mostly)
15 Voom Networks (Love to have these)
YES-HD,SNY-HD,MSG-HD,FSNY-HD (again for the NY DMA)

There might be some that I'm leaving out,but I personally think that the lineup isn't horrible on this service and that it will get better once Verizon is a more prominent television provider. It wouldn't really deter me from switching over since I would get many networks that Comcast doesn't currently carry in NJ like Boomerang and HDNET/HDNET Movies as well as a superfast 15/2 or 20/5 connection for around the same price or cheaper than I'm paying Comcast.

You know the majority of those channels you listed are Cablevision owned?

Word came out today from JWhip over at AVS, that Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia (SD &HD) will be in the FIOS Premier package and will not be a separate premium at least in his area, as originally thought. Hopefully it will be in the FIOS Premier tier in all areas.

I think his source may just have gotten the information from FiOSWatch. Verizon employees outside of management do not know what is going on, vis-a-vis negotiations.

As mentioned by another poster before, I'll believe it when I see it. Comcast Sportsnet is the swing factor for me. Withoutit, I can't switch. I would love nothing more than to switch to FiOS TV, if that channel is included.
I can't wait to get my hands on that multi-room DVR. A bit pricey, but hey, cutting edge costs money!

Comcast SportsNet is already included...just not the HD version.

I'd like to believe you. But we're talking about two different animals here. You're in Maryland; a fine state at that, and I love the Terps. But FiOS TV has yet to be rolled out here in PA, and SportsNet Philly may not be included. They let Comcast play by their own rules here. After all, it's their flagship, mothership, whatever ship, where it all began, their headquarters, and Philly loves the tax income that Comcast generates. We'll see.

If it does get carried, though, it would be a bit of sour grapes, as there's nothing quite like hockey in HD, but I would probably be able to live with the SD version.

Sorry, didn't pay attention to your location and that sucks. I agree, hockey in HD rules and it is tough to watch it in SD. However, the game on Versus last night (where the Flyers got STOMPED) was in great quality.

Go Caps! Go Sharks!

I just printed out the channel lineup for SE PA, which Verizon seems to have added recently. Lo and behold, Comcast Sportsnet HD is there. How about that.

I agree, rlstjohn. Go Caps. I've been a Caps fan my whole life, been a rough couple a years, but better times are on the horizon. Not too shabby so far this year...

So anyway, the channel lineup is available for PA, but I can't sign up yet. Can't wait. Does anyone have a multiroom DVR? Any feedback on it? Thanks.

Damn...no CSN-HD here yet! Hopefully it will be coming soon. I don't have a multi-room DVR so I can't help you. It was a few dollars more just to get two of the DVRs so I went that route for more recording room.

Yeah, you know what? I think I'll end up doing that too. Why not. The only benefit to the multi room setup is the interaction with your PC; pictures and music and such. But I had that for awhile with my Series 2 Tivo, and never used it, so I think I'd rather have two DVR's with all of that expanded recording space. Good call.

So how is the quality of your picture? HD, specifically. Any complaints? How about the DVR? I've been using basically the same model Moto, from Comcast, for a year and a half, and unlike a lot of posters, I have no complaints about it. Hoping the Fios DVR performs as well.

Thanks for your feedback.

HD Quality is awesome...much, much better that I had with DirecTV.

How about the DVR? I've really gotten used to the Comcast version, Moto 6412 I believe, and I'm hoping the Fios experience is just as good. Any gripes?

Compared to ReplayTV (and TiVo), the Comcast/Motorola DVR sucks dead gerbils through a garden hose.

Seriously, it's nowhere near up to the responsiveness and UI quality of Replay or TiVo. Only having (annoying) FF and RW and the UI delay in responding to remote commands is a real pain. Also annoying things like it not just continuing to record if you try to turn it off while recording, turning itself on to record with the audio muted (and no easy way to unmute it if you start watching while it's doing this), etc.
I won't even mention missing skip-forward.... Also, once you start getting hundreds of hours of recorded programs, categorization is important.

(We have 3 ReplayTV's and I've used TiVos, and we have a Comcast Motorola 6412.)

All that said, we plan to switch to FIOS-TV and get a DVR for one reason: HD. Replay's are GREAT but they don't do HD.

I had the DirecTV Tivo which is different from a normal Tivo and the it certainly has more features than the FIOS DVR, but my understanding is that there will be a software upgrade coming soon. I've never had issues with recording programs or anything of that nature. I just wish the drives were a bit bigger in the current DVRs. If you record a few HD movies and programs the space will fill up rather quickly. I have only a few minor complaints about the FIOS DVR and besides space another would be easier navigation through some of the menus.

The Comcast Moto has its negatives, but considering the alternatives, I love it. Yeah, I hate the ghost 1989 recordings, the huge delay sometimes when entering commands, the non existant recording conflicts it reports, etc. I also have a Series 2 Tivo in the house, though, so I can compare them fairly.
Yes, the Tivo menu performs better. Hands down winner. But I had to BUY the Tivo box, and pay $12.95 a month for service. For a single tuner, SD DVR. The comcast Moto as you know has the dual tuners, and records in HD. For $9.95 a month and nothing up front. Not bad.

I guess I could go and blow about a grand on a new Tivo dual tuner box, but even that one can't record two HD shows at once. Only one HD and the other SD. Bah humbug.

So I'm sticking with the Comcast moto, until I can switch to Verizon Fios TV, and then I'll sign up for TWO Verizon moto's. The negatives are a trade off for all of the positives. It's a trade I'd make every time.
