Re: [RANT] vista can only be reintalled once?

If this is true, than this truly sucks. First the ridiculous price tag on it, and now this? I understand that Microsoft has a right to crack down on piracy, but to shake down those who purchased a legitimate copy for more money if they replace their system? That's just pure greed IMO.

I hope that whoever the OP got this info from might have not gotten all the facts straight. Maybe Microsoft will indeed do that with OEM versions; after all OEM copies are only licensed to be used on the computer that they were sold with and license cannot be transfered to any other machine. I think this is already being done with XP, Microsoft will not allow you to re-activate an OEM copy on a different machine. And if your computer breaks to the point that the entire machine has to be swapped out, your OEM will have to supply you with a different CD key so that you can activate XP on a replacement machine. However, a retail version should not come with these limitations. You should be able to move it to any computer you like, as long as you stop using it on the old one.

I have a friend who is a .NET programmer. Last year, we had a lengthy talk about the Microsoft goal of moving all applications to per-use licensing, via the web. That means that:

a) you'll need a web connection to use a computer
b) you'll pay for applications by some unit of time/keystrokes

MS could be gently nudging users in that direction with the stricter licensing rules.

Ultimately, users will get to choose between MS and open source.
