1 edit | Any cheap methods to protect Wi-Fi from Microwave?
My microwave is wreaking havoc with my wireless network. I basically have one side of the house connected to the "WAN" Router through a WDS-Link and the microwave destroys the link when its on (channels don't do anything). Moving the Client-side router isn't an ideal option since it would require wiring I don't feel like doing  I'm not really familiar with electronics, but what material would be ideal to use to build a pseudo-faraday cage? There isn't Paint that can do it right?

When you say a WDS-Link, do you mean you have a bridge? If so, more directional antennas with better front-to-back ratio will help. |

If (changing?) channels don't do anything, maybe the problem isn't in the air, it's in the power line. Get a pair of line filters - one for the microwave, the other for the router.

Microwaves are allowed to leak a sizable amount of power, and they operate in the 2.4ghz range, that's why people recommend not standing close to one anyways. Probably the faraday cages in modern microwaves may be better, but getting a microwave this size is going to be expensive. I was thinking of switching up to directional attennas as my signal is pretty crappy anyways.
And yeah, WDS-Bridge. P2P would be overkill for this network.
I found a paint »www.forcefieldwireless.com/defen···ive.html Was hoping there's something thats more attainable locally but may have to give that a try.

The cheapest way possible? Hmm, I had an idea;
Step 1-unplug microwave
Step 2-Carry microwave to trash
Step 3- Drop microwave in trash
Step 4- Enjoy better wifi!
That's the cheapest solution, albeit, not desirable. Anyway, all jokes aside:
You could reposition your microwave, or even your PCI antenna (using an antenna stand). Also, as others have been saying, using directional antennas reallly helps.
Oddly enough I have never had problems with my microwave causing issues with my wireless network...odd. |

Yeah I wish I could move the microwave, just no where in the house it can fit. I mean the microwave isn't right next to it, a good 6 feet away with a wall seperating them.

I have had a problem once. My mom turned the microwave on and my connection dropped dead in an instant. But it soon returned. I think that the router senses and can convert to a different channel since auto select is checked on my wireless. Never had a drop since. |

use channel 1. Most microwave ovens trash up the top half of the band more than the lower end. 6 Ft is too close. |

Channel 1 was actually the channel I've been using since first creating the network, and I've been switching to others to see if it alleviates the problem. 6 feet is too close, but neither objects can be moved at this point. The only realistic object to be moved is the Router, and thats going to be a pita and probably more expensive than the paint.
PS I've tried auto-select, doesn't seem to work at all. Dunno, I use DD-WRT Broadcom routers so *shrug*.

I always find its the low channels that get ruined when the microwave is on; I'm sure it varies by manufacturer.
How old is this microwave? |

Can you try powering the router from a wall circuit that you know is not on the same circuit as the microwave? |

They aren't on the same circuit and they're on adjacent walls, but not on the other side of the same wall. Not that it makes a huge difference, but the router is on a UPS too.
The microwave itself is probably 5-10 years old.

Is this a Panasonic "inverter" oven by any chance?
The one microwave I've seen on an analyzer tends to puts put out a narrow spike which drifts a bit in frequency; should really only crush a few channels. Pretty much all microwaves except the "inverter" ones work the same way, so I'd expect similar interference. |

I've tried 1, 6, 11 mainly as thats what the DD-wrt wiki says are the channels to use in G-Mode WPA-enabled WDS-Bridges. I did use 13 for awhile, same thing though.
