CCL Hosting - The Next Chapter?

I learned about CCL Hosting here on broadbandreports.com. It had many advocates.

For a couple of years I enjoyed great and friendly support from CCL and I thank Greg, Mark, & company for all the great help.

I think there has been enough of a change in the support level at CCL that it's only reasonable to look for the next chapter in my web hosting life. Even the forums at CCL are mostly dead now.

What have other CCL members done, given the new era of limited and slow support at CCL?

I moved to SurpassHosting almost a year ago. It has been mostly good. Setup hits some bumps, but I think most of that was my incompetence. Support helped me through (even on Christmas Day!)

Intermittently, I have had significant slowdowns. These tends to mostly affect cpanel and webmail not the HTML pages. Still, this is a problem as I depend on webmail. The cause of these slowdowns are almost always other users on the server and eventually they are stopped.

Lastly, a handful of times, the server has just 'broken' with settings that I have no control over getting messed up. Support has fixed these quickly as well.

Overall, I am happy though I have learned to address one issue at a time with support.

By the way, there is a decent discussion of Surpass and Dreamhost at Surmunity now.

Good luck.

I left CCL a few months ago and I also went to Surpass. I have a few small websites with no real funky stuff running. Most I have is a formmail and a phpBB forum for family and friends.

I am very very happy so far at Surpass. Price is a little bit higher than what I paid at CCL but I get a lot more for the money (although I don't use it because the amount of space and stuff I had at CCL was more than enough for me anyways).

I had a minor issue with my FormMail.pl script with Surpass when I started and they bent over backwards to accommodate me. I was very happy. Service has been great and my site is up most of the time (whenever I check anyway) and it is very fast.

Only thing I don't like is that they have no telephone number for billing support. I haven't needed one (yet) but I don't like it when a company doesn't have a number for money stuff. Tech stuff I can see because they would be flooded with tech support calls. They have a pretty good system for tech support with a "ticket" system and email that seems to work pretty well. They are pretty efficient with their support tickets. But in the unlikely event that I have a money/billing issue I would like to have someone I can talk to.

Overall I am very happy I moved to Surpass from CCL.

Edit added:
One more thing I don't like ... they only have auto-charging of your credit card. For monthly accounts that's fine but I pay annually so I don't see why they just can't send me a email bill a month or two before my bill is due and then just let me pay it myself for another year of service.
I hate things that auto-deduct themselves from my account! I DO NOT like to give anyone that kind of access to my account. The ability to keep deducting and me having a hard time stopping it. I prefer to pay for a year in advance and then next year send me a bill and I will pay again.

Again, I can see if someone goes monthly. That would be a lot for them to keep asking you every month for the money so auto deduct might be the way to go. But annually?

I also left and went with Surpass. Setup was a real problem. There were mistakes on my part but I believe most of the problems arose from Surpass attempting to move my site over.
All in all I've had little downtime and am satisfied. Like Sentinel, I am paying more for a lot more but I don't need the space or bandwidth.

FYI, I had two sites hosted on CCL. I moved to a reseller package (OC10) and I am overall happy. Having the ability to 'give away' space to friends/family is nice.

Sure, why not? I also moved about a year ago to Surpass. They've been great. I have the Bronze package and they recently upgraded it so that I have 10GB to use for webspace (5GB for my own site, which is WAY more than enough).

Service is great and I usually don't have issues with the service. The $15/month (which i pre-pay each year) is a drop in the bucket for hosting my sites. My sites have already paid for that fee so it's no strain.

Overall, good solid company with more than 1-2 people working it, which is a plus for me. I feel bad for Greg in a way; he can never really take a "real" vacation. I know how he feels running my business solo. It takes time to get competent people.

My experience was so-so. Especially too many downtimes during summer. Too lazy to transfer to another hosting now, once I'll need hosting for something semi-serious, I'll find someone else.

I left them and went to Surpass a couple of months ago. Email for my default account on CCL was screwed up and slow. I had to login to my username and username@domain.com just to retrieve it. They took too long to even address the issue and they never fixed it. In the end, I could no longer retrieve my emails directed to username@domain.com.

I've had enough of the near-death of CCL Hosting. I can't take any more pain. My emails that I send through CCL are being rejected by major mail providers and ISPs and may be classified as spam.

Enough is enough. Goodbye CCL.
