[Spam] SETI emails...

I've been getting SETI@home emails to many of my email accounts. The first time I got this, I was like, yeah, I replaced my PC and never installed/re-activated SETI@home.
But I never registered my other machines nor used those email accounts so this raised a flag.
Now today, I got one on my .mac account saying I haven't used it since December of 2000 (which I never used the .mac for anything but developer Apple stuff).
Nothing looks strange in the email links (via view raw headers...all point to berkeley.edu servers). Looks legit but still, i'm not loading any graphics nor clicking on them.
Why is SETI spamming? If I haven't used it since 2000, why not just deactivate the account?
And, I never had a dot mac account in 2000.

Have you checked to see if you still have an old account(s). I believe you have to remove all of your info yourself.

If you never had a .mac email in 2000 and have not used SETI then it obviously has to be fake.

Seti@Home from Berkeley is using a mailing list of all members that are currently inactive asking them to return to crunching Seti.

If you did not remove yourself as a member you had given them permission to contact you. It is technically not spam since you did signup at one time. You are still listed as a member but currently inactive.
If you don't want to participate anymore or don't want e-mail from them then you must remove yourself from their membership listing. No one but you can do so.

While that may be true, it is impossible for SETI to send legitimate email to an address that you did not have when you joined SETI and obviously could not have used to sign up with SETI. SETI can only send legitimate email to the address you supplied when you signed up and has no way of figuring out what other email addresses you may have created elsewhere after signing up.

While what you say is true that it is impossible for seti to send e-mail to an address they don't have. It is logical to say if the e-mail is from Seti@Home Berkeley you must of supplied it at sometime. They are way to busy and under staffed to go and goggle or search for peoples non Seti registered e-mail accounts.

That's why I said it was likely not legitimate. S@H has no way to send to an email to another address that they don't know about.

Thank you for the link and information!

After I posted, I did some digging and found that I only registered my old email. So I removed that. The emails did infact come from berkeley'd SETI, so either I am in absentia, or some list or contact somewhere has registered my other emails to them (which I will "click to remove").

I should only have one email with them now. And, fire up the screensaver!

Had to be something that you did as I just rechecked my SETI@Home account and only my one (1) original email is present and accounted for at this time.
