1 edit | Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program begins...

"If you don't like the mandatory antipiracy checks that Microsoft now enforces for Windows, brace yourself. The Microsoft Office productivity and collaboration suite is about to get a similar program.
The company's Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) program will require mandatory validation of Office software starting October 27, the software vendor quietly disclosed today. After that date, any Office Online templates downloaded from within the Office 2007 Microsoft Office System applications will require validation of legitimacy.
Similarly, starting in January, users of Office Update will have to validate the legitimacy of their Office software before they can use the service, Microsoft added..." -- Ant @ The Ant Farm: »antfarm.ma.cx ... I feel like soon we'll be sending to m$ everyday reports about what we're doing with our computers if we do not stop this paranoia madness.
You want a utility to change couple of registry values - go and send report (so called "validation check"), you need a new template - do the same again, and again, and again... -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |

Maybe everybody should give MS exactly what they are demanding; every few milliseconds, from now and until MS gets the message. Call it a D_GAOS protest of compliance. |

1 edit | reply to antdude Open Office solves this problem quite nicely. WGA was very inaccurate and did nothing to stop the pirates. MS must love aggravating it's legitimate customers.

| reply to antdude I think many users will simply be oblivious to yet another wave of authorization handshaking... as long as their system boots and runs its software dependably, they really don't care what it takes to get there. But - the key words here are: "as long as".
The more layers of these sign/counter-sign rituals that get piled on by MS, the greater the probability that something unexpected (usually "bad") will happen somewhere in all the torturous WGA/OGA/?GA(tbd) processes to foul legitimate users' computers... especially in a world where half the stuff on most computers already has auto-updating going on, literally daily. The more that critical digital bits are put into play, the greater the odds of some of them not finding their way home... and "interesting" things will then start to happen... and soon start to compound.
Meanwhile, out around the margins of the marketplace, various folks will finally start getting bent out of shape enough over the hiccups, errors, and grief to look elsewhere for their software needs. It will begin with the specialists, the gamers, the ones routinely surfing in harm's way... it will eventually finds its way into the ranks of corporate users... and finally to the Joe-sixpack home users. If there's an alternative, almost-as-good product, they'll eventually start to drift there. If not, some discerning designer will sense the growing demand and move into the market with a competing product that addresses the emerging needs - in this case, for stability and simplicity of use. And thus a trend gets born, and a new rising software star appears. All it currently requires is for MS to make use of their products painful enough that the alternatives begin to look attractive, on balance. Consider Firefox and Opera... their growing adoption mirrors the growing dissatisfaction levels with IE and MS in general - for a variety of reasons.
This all has a lot of time to run yet, and it'll be fascinating for some of us to watch it unfolding... -- If God wanted us to work with electrons, He'd make them big enough to see... |
