Re: University red herring

sounds like bad business to me. A temporary monopoly on the internet lines they serve.

ISP"s have been blocking skype off and on because they are trying to sell VOIP.

I am almost certain that Universities are banning Skype because it obviates the need for the exploitative phone plans that have been part and parcel of college life for a long time. It also makes call tracing much more difficult and they are likely frightened about legal liabilities.

Any "bandwidth" issue is a red herring. Students run all manner of p2p, file sharing, streaming video and other apps, each of which probably uses at least 10x the bandwidth of Skype.

Re: _

For me, for about a year now i have been pleasantly happy with skype. the fact they added free calls to the us is even better.I am surprised it didn't get that much bigger. As for banning of skype on university's i think one step that would greatly help was if it didn't act as a p2p client. the address book works on the p2p basis and fills up the firewall log all with its uses. IF they could tame that or centralize that I think we would see some improvement. As for bandwidth i do not think that is actually an issue, except to maybe the uninformed. As for gizmo, i saw this service but i have not tested it out. Skype has some major money behind it and free tv with ads over internet... sign me up.
