I am almost certain that Universities are banning Skype because it obviates the need for the exploitative phone plans that have been part and parcel of college life for a long time. It also makes call tracing much more difficult and they are likely frightened about legal liabilities.
Any "bandwidth" issue is a red herring. Students run all manner of p2p, file sharing, streaming video and other apps, each of which probably uses at least 10x the bandwidth of Skype. |
