[modem/router] WRT54G & Westell 6100

Well this is my setup. I been having issues lately. I was using some HyperWRT firmware, and I just went to the Linksys site to get a new firmware and I got the wrt54g v3 and now it shows up as WRT54GL anyone else?

How do you guys have your westell 6100 & linksys connected?

Previously I was using westell 6100 (VC COnfiguration > Bridge) and Router setup > PPPOE > verizon username/pass

I just finish doing that myself because I was on the phone with a Level 3 tech which seemed to be a level 1 and he told me. Leave the westell how it is, connect the router and go into the router 192.168.1.1 and we changed the router ip to 192.168.2.1 and he said I don't know why is not working .

There is two ways to connect a linksys with Verizon service,
1-Modem(PPPoe)-Linksys(Auto-DHCP)
2-Modem(Bridge)-Linksys(PPPoe)
If u select the first option
Verify that modem is working and u have internet access with it, connect the Linksys directly into the computer (NO MODEM involved..repeat NO MODEM)
-Access 192.168.1.1 - user(blank)-password(admin)
Change local ipaddress to another 3 class like 192.168.2.1
for AVOID double NATING they have the same ipaddress
- reconnect modem linksys computer.... it should work now or maybe u need repair local area connection
----------------------------------------------------------
- Second option put modem bridge disable dhcp server....IMPORTANT disable for avoid DOUBLE NAT, access Linksys 192.168.1.1 input user name and password, save, go to status receive a WAN IP internet access if not check DNS it could be many THINGS!!!

of course a wireless access point or a router set to do that would be fine too...since the Westell 6100 does NAT out when its set to PPPoE (i.e. if you hooked it up to a hub or switch you could have multiple PCs on it). An Access point is basically a wireless hub...

I use to do the first option at first.. UntiL i started getting too many disconnects. I guess because I didn't change the local ip. Currently I been doing MODem (Bridge) Linksys(PPPoE) .. I think i want to try the first option again 1 of these days.
Which way is the best way though ?

Both methods to connect will work equally well. I have mine setup with the 6100 in bridge mode and the WRT54G doing the PPPoE.
Not to confuse the issue, but possibly to assist in troubleshooting, you can set the modem to do PPPoE and DHCP and then connect it into a LAN port on the Linksys. The Linksys will need to be assigned a static address within in the subnet mask of the 6100. By doing this the 6100 is the only thing controlling the DSL connection. (There is no NAT going on so make sure you have a firewall setup.)

Keep in mind before you beat your network up too much that frequent disconnects may not be anything on your end. It could be a Verizon issue. Is the modem set to keep the connection connected or is it connect on demand? ( I am sure you have checked this but I had to ask.)
How do your modem stats look? Noise margin and line attenuation, specifically.

What do you mean by disconnects? The DSL light blinks or the internet light goes out? If the DSL light blinks, this is usually a physical line issue. If the Internet light goes out, this is usually PPPoE issue caused by a session timeout or an authentication server problem.

As far as the linksys firmware, yes, the newer versions show the device as a WRT54GL. This is normal for V1.0->4.0

No changes its just optional to use a Linksys controllin thePPPoe or the modem, if u want my opinion i rather the bridge and pppoe on the linksys WHY? if for some reason the Linksys reset it will return to the old ipaddress and double nat will become again, if u leave westell bridge and pppoe if something reset it self the worst thing that u will need to do is retype user name and password on the linksys.

Yes the DSL line and the whole modem would be reboot. Sometimes just the dsl line would start blinking. I got the v2 firmware since I saw in back of my router its a CDF5 and still shows WRT54GL its good to have new firmware now when I get my laptop I gotta try to get the wireless enabled.

This is the procedure that I use.

Sometimes after everything is connected, you have to power down the computer, router and modem. Then power up the modem first, then the router and then start your computer.
