Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

I have been having some bad connection problems lately. I had a tech come out today and of course everything looks good on his end he replaced the cable from the line to the house which did not change anything. I have had some really bad packet-loss to where I have lost all internet connection for a minute or so but it is not enough to kick my modem off. I know its not the modem I have already replaced it and I know its not my router. Just curious if anyone else has had an issues. I will post some more information when I get home tomorrow afternoon. My download and upload speeds are normal until the packet-loss hits.

It looks like your packet loss is just at 2%. All that other stuff doesn't count.

that is true but when the packetloss hits I can not do anything. It fluctuates from 2%-10% packetloss it is all random.

The 2% loss is on your end. Something is happening between your router and your Insight gateway...

SO that means it is insights problem correct? Since I have done everything possible on my end as in new modem/diff router/using no router at all.

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

If you have eliminated your equipment, then yes. Insight has set up group line monitoring. It should be free. From the links at the top of the Insight forum landing page:

»/testhistory?view=29

Shows what the results look like. Go here to sign up:

»Insight Line Monitors - Open Sign-Up

So far, I have seen this for Comcast, Charter, and AT&T West, as well. I have set up for AT&T West, though I am not seeing any trouble.

This will show a continuous result over a 24/7 period. Note that the green band shows the latency, and the blue line the packet loss (at your end). If the Insight forum has given this to you, maybe you can use it for better assistance.

I am also having similar issues with packet loss in Jefferson Co. This is primarily in the evening. I had a technician out today and he said my signal is almost perfect. At that point I was not having any problems with packet loss. He did state that there is a known issue in my area (Crescent Hill) where people begin to have problems after 7pm and they were working on the problem. Here it is 8pm and I am starting to drop approximately 10% of my traffic...

It is getting ridiculous. I can't even surf the net at times or play any games. I am not even attempting to use my vonage phone with the packet loss all I get is inbound audio most of the time the outbound data gets cut out. It has been like this for a couple weeks now.

Ping statistics for 64.218.170.57:

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

I've had these issues for a couple of months now, on and off. I have a technician coming on Thursday to look at the lines again. Yesterday I managed to talk to a customer svc rep who confirmed that I was getting 17% packet loss from their system to my modem. This ruled out any networking problems in my house, and I just bought a brand new SB5120 modem.

I'm in the Okalona area. I'll reply again with any results from the technician on thursday.

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

I had insight on the phone yesterday for an hour trying to figure out where my packet loss was coming from. It wasn't the modem, router or my NIC. He was getting packetloss to a second modem I had with out it being hooked up to anything else ( the router or the nic on the comp). It did the same as the old modem. He sent out another tech to come out today. The field tech did not even know what I was showing him when I was preforming a ping on google (ping google.com -t) and showing him where it lost the packets! Do the techs only know how to check the signal? I have a Problem escalation ticket number from the phone tech last night. The Tech that came out today said he is going to have them check the main line tomorrow. If it is not fixed tomorrow looks like I will be calling again and asking for a credit for the last few weeks that I have been having this trouble. You would figure with numerous phone calls and 4-5 techs being out in the last couple months all my problems would be fixed. /End Rant. Just steaming right now.

JoshT80

@insightbb.com

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

I still have about 20% packet loss in Okolona.

The tech came out on Friday. He swapped modems (I have a brand new one). After an hour of trying to get the new modem to pull an IP address, there was no change (big surprise). He gave me his supervisor's card and told me to call when the problem was occuring. There are periods of time where I have very low packet loss, which just happens to be when the techs show up at my house. So far the supervisor isn't answering his phone or returning voice mail.

I have another tech scheduled to come out on Tuesday. This will be the 4th one in the past month. Let's hope I get lucky this time!

Tech came out today again. He said he replaced a port somewhere on there end. Still the same issues so far. I still have the ticket open. They still have determined it is on there end they just cant figure out what. I had to call the tech on the phone again since the field tech had already left. Had to go through the same spill about I have already tried that and tell them I will do it again to show you but it will be the same result. Not there fault they are just doing there job. Same problem here in St Matthews. I can't play multiplayer games at night due to all the lag spikes. Of course when I call insight about the problem they try to bs me with all kinds of excuses about how it's a problem with my computer. Last night I ran a few traceroutes and in the first 4 hops, which is insights network I was got times of 1034ms and 3036ms. A tech is coming out on Tuesday and I already know the result, everything will test out fine. Pathedic.

What good does it do them to keep denying it and sending techs out to our homes anyway? The tech that came here said it himself...there is a problem and he doesn't know why them keep sending them out. Why can't they just admit it?

so they came and replaced my modem and now instead of 4mb down, i am getting 10.25mb down. that's great news, but only time will tell about the packetloss problem and the loss of bandwidth at night. they said, "we've been having problems, but we don't know when it will be fixed".

jdunc, i live in st. matthews as well and my connection has been really poor also. I can't play games on xbox live without lagging all over the place. My download/upload speed has been similar to yours. I called Insight over the weekend and the person I spoke did some pings and said some of mine were really high. I have a tech coming out tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

My tech tonight was a no-show. You just don't understand how angry that makes me. I called and complained, but got no where. I did find out that my problem had been escalated to the NOC, but that may have just been something they told me to get off the phone. When I asked how long it would be before the problem is fixed, I got no answer. Apparently I'll also not receive any kind of status reports. I guess I'll just have to call every night. I'm almost at the point of switching to DSL . I have 10% packet loss as I type this message.

You might try signing up for the line monitor group for Insight. It is free. It monitors your pings and you can see a graph like this that will tell you more about your connection. This one is mine. .

This may help you pinpoint the times that you loose your signal.

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

The tech came today and ran some tests via some insight beta speed test that connects with the local hub at: »74.128.14.17/ and within minutes I had ranges of 2mb down to 8mb down...so long story short he put in a work order for guys to check the lines outside and try to figure out what the heck is going on.

The tech who came didn't even know that non-business subscribers were bumped up to 10megs. He thinks that we only get 5 megs down...it's pretty discouraging to know that the employees aren't aware of major service changes.

JoshCharter

@charter.com

I've been having the same issues. Speed is fine, it runs great but every 15 minutes to an hour I get a spike of total loss of connectivity. The modem stays synched but no traffic going through. It doesn't disconnect me from what I'm doing (WoW or Halo) but it freezes me for a while and is very annoying. Sometimes it's happening 4-5 times in a 10 minute span.

I do tech support for Charter so I know how to troubleshoot things like this, and it's absolutely a problem on Insight's end. I haven't spent any time on the phone with them YET, but probably will tonight when I get home, although from the posts above mine it won't do much good.

It had actually been running pretty good before they rolled out the 10/1. I'll call tonight and post back if I get anywhere. My signals are excellent, just lose connection for 30 seconds to a minute at a time.

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

JoshCharter, same exact thing as me. My speeds are good when I get them, and its just that spurt of packetloss that renders my internet dead. Not long enough to drop the modem but long enough to stop anything I am doing. Although a call might help, most of the time they will roll a tech out that has no idea of you problem and will call out someone else to check the main line when he didn't see a problem on your line. After he has found nothing wrong he will say he fixed something (in my case a port somewhere) if its not better in a couple days call back... If it is not better instantly how did he even fix it? anyways good luck Josh on getting that fixed. Hopefully all the problems will be gone soon. My internet used to be rock solid until the last 6-8 months. I have had more outages and problems in the last 6-8 months that I have had in like 5 years.

Jdunc, Glad to see it was something simple with your speed issues. Keep us updated on the packetloss if you are still seeing it. I am getting good speeds most of the time like you are seeing. I am getting around 10Mb/1Mb on insights test server and a little less on some of the others on this forums.

For Louisville 40208 area; I'm just west of the UofL campus. Already had a tech out, then some more techs after him. It seems kinda odd that it's a pattern that speeds return to normalcy before techs come out, as it occurred with me also.

Found out that my area is "an area with a problem, and it's being worked on." Hopefully this gets fixed before the week is up.

24% packet loss tonight :-(

Called again, and the tech I talked to saw no record of a ticket being submitted to the NOC last night. So, I sat on the phone while this tech submitted another one. Let's hope the NOC works its magic. The tier 1 techs that we talk to on the phone can't even see the tickets once they go to the NOC, so there's no way to get a status update according to them.

Time for my nightly update.

The packet loss started early tonight at about 4:00PM. I called Insight again and the tech I spoke to this time was miraculously able to view the status of my ticket with the NOC even though the previous 2 techs have assured me that it was not possible. According to her, they have a 24 hours monitor on my connection. She also told me that there was maintenance being performed in the Louisville area over the next 48 hours.

Hopefully, if she isn't just pulling my chain, we'll see some improvements soon.

After a couple calls and chatting with the friendly support guys, my hunch was confirmed, that the servers (in certain areas) cant handle the speed, such as Louisville, ky and Lafayette, in. Theya re working on upgrading these servers. The packet loss has stopped me from playing my game but thats about it, everything else seems to run fine! THEY NEED TO HURRY I WANT MY PING BACK!

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

Packet loss up again tonight. I was supposed to get a call back from Teir2 Tech Support yesterday but I never received a call. Of course he couldn't figure out my problem. He was convinced it was on my end since he said... "Lets unplug everything from the modem and check it out" I did as he requested. "I am showing alot less packetloss now".. I was thinking hello captain obvious... I am not doing anything so it should have little or no packetloss. I hook my computer up and do some speed tests and surfing "I see quite a bit of packetloss now compared to when I tested it with nothing hooked up to it." Again kind of obvious. When there is no traffic coming in or going out of my computer the packetloss is going to be drastically less since there is less packets to drop. Anyways I don't plan on hearing back from him since he couldn't figure out anything. Right now I am trying to upload a file but I cant even get it to upload past 50Mb without it dropping my connection!!

Edit: I was looking at the line monitor results for us who have it set up.... looks like me and josht80 are having some of the worse consistant packet loss issues. There are a couple other that look like they have had a complete outage... but that could have been from turning the modem off.

I ordered DSL this morning. I'll keep Insight for a couple of months to see if they fix the problem since I'm a sucker for 10mb/1mb. However, I won't be paying for it. I called and got a 1 month credit yesterday, and I suggest that you do the same petey_.

I've been having this problem since July 10th and they continue to give me the run-around. I need some lag-free WoW time and the ability to actually check my email at night without it taking 20 minutes.

The total monthly charges (including tax) for DSL 6mb/512kb service from Bellsouth plus a basic phone line (rip off), is $72.61 in Louisville, KY if anyone is curious. Insight is certainly the better deal when it works!

It would seem that the maintenance didn't help much. What's bad is that, judging from our group line monitor, ten people had bad packet loss today around 8PM. My wife and I were disconnected from WoW several times during that time frame. Oddly enough, latency remained somewhat manageable.

Unacceptable. This past week I have been having problems, primarily at night when things start to get really cold. I had a tech come by today and he was telling me that 'this is an ongoing problem.' That is simply unacceptable. I am completely without any broadband access from about 10pm to after about 10am each day. This is an "ongoing problem???" After also telling him about how my digital tv box was acting up (on screen guide not working right, several digital channels not working, and on-demand being very choppy) he went out and tested the signal and said that it was too high. Well, here's my thing. The signal is high and I'm online now. Why do I loose the signal only at night when it gets cold? What it comes down to is that I'm getting less than half of what I'm paying for. Unacceptable!!

Re: Packet loss in Louisville, Jefferson CO area

Skeeve2010,

The problem is probably that people on your Node do not use their connection at night as much as others allocating more signal on the line to come into your modem. I am not sure but I had the same problem in the past. During peak times my connection was fine but early in the morning or late at night my signal would be up over +16Db which is not in the acceptable range -12Db to +12Db. My problem was an easy fix I figure out myself. I had a Motorola Signal booster that worked on cable and broadband. All I did was split it before the booster where the modem had it's own line off the booster. Insight might have to fix something at your drop to lower the signal, they also have had to do that in my area. Someone correct me if I am wrong this is just an assumption.

Hey all, seems this forum is alot more active than the insightbb.com forum. I live in downtown Louiville, a couple blocks from UofL campus. I've had Insight for 4+ months. At first I had no complaints, but they have let me down the last couple months. Unfortunately my connection is worthless for internet gaming due to packet loss. I've called several times, and have reformatted and all that.
