Hockytown: You *might* be able to buy a non OEM BIOS for that Dell that lets you go into the settings and modify stuff, but don't expect much of any kind of adjustable Factory Dell OEM BIOS when you get it.
This is one of the major reasons we build are own around here, most of us.
Now, that said, if you download SiSoft Sandra, it will look at your BIOS, and you have the option of linking to a website that has a program that will inspect your system and offer to sell you an driver update service and a non OEM BIOS, if it is available. I happen to have just learned of this, myself. I wouldn't count on it, though, for an OEM motherboard, like you are getting though, and you would void your warranty anyways...
There are a lot of good reasons we build our own, and some of us build as the hot deals and sales and rebates come along, that is how we build for less. Doing that is not practical for many folks.

exactly. for what you need it may not do bad. just don't really plan on overclocking it. I actually end up suggesting pre built to most people that ask me to build them a system. If they want a top o the line no holds barred, I can build it, for a grand or under they get tech support, a monitor, speakers, etc. Seems the way to go if you don't need a lot of raw power.

If you are not going to overclock/play game ... the Dell is a good one. Cheap, reliable. All you need is adding more memory and a good video card for your video redering, etc. |

I plan on using it for Rendering videos and doing digital photo editing. No games at all.
I started looking at prebuilt system once I started pricing out my own system on NewEgg and got to about $1k just for the basic system, no frills PC. My thinking was for another $49, I was getting a 19in monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse, TV Tuner, Card Reader etc.....
So your suggestion is to still go with the custom built system for about the same price?

Bad idea...
Generally if you are going to overclock, you'll need a different motherboard than the one that comes with any Dell, Gateway, etc. Their BIOS's lack all the important settings that allow for overlocking in the first place.
Then you have to consider the power supply is going to be minimal/weak, and the RAM won't have any headroom. Oh and the cooling they include won't work either.
Basically you could buy a prebuilt system, but you'd have to throw out everything except the CPU and start over. Really you need to start out buying the right stuff from scratch if you want to OC.
Also, upping from 1.83Ghz to a little over 2Ghz is what a 10% OC? If you buy the right parts you probably can get a E6300 in the range of 3-3.4Ghz easy.
Also what do you plan on doing with this computer? If using it for games you'll need a much better video card anyway. |

I've been looking at my Best Buy circular all week trying to decide if this is a good deal or not. I know that the E6400's will be out shortly in packages like this, but I believe I'd buy this now if I knew it were possible to OC' it. What do you guys think? Can this thing be OC'd? All I'd like to do is get it up from the stock 1.83ghz to over 2.O.
Also....what do you think about the package components and price? Worth the $1049 or not?
