[Unstable] So Changing the BIOS *can* help!

So I went from 1018.x Beta BIOS to 1017.x BIOS on my ASUS A8V Deluxe board, and I am able to get faster speeds so far, by a little, and on top of that, I am no longer failing prime 95, I have been running it now for about 18 or so hours and things are running fine so far, with 1018 I couldn't even get prime to start!

But here is a question I want to pose to some of you: S. Sandra has a link in it when you run tests to a BIOS optimization service. The service, I found out after I ran the thing and it offered to have me ask them to contact me, provides me with the BIOS creators very latest NEW BIOS, as the OEM BIOS versions stopped development over a year ago. The rep said he has a 2006 non OEM BIOS for my board that could be better.

However, when I told the rep that my system right now is running better with 1017 rather than 1018, he sounded a bit surprised.

Do you guys think it could even possibly be worth plonking down 30 bucks for this non OEM BIOS? I just wonder if maybe THAT is part of what could be holding this board back some...

I am running stable, evidently, at 2760 so far now with a 4800, and I have read this is where a lot of people end up at as well, with few getting past it, but that there are some who have gotten to 2850+/- or up to 3K. Maybe some of you might know...

Re: [Unstable] So Changing the BIOS *can* help!

Yeah, it seemed odd to me too, but now that I have seen the difference in what BIOS can do on a modern board, and seeing as the better BIOS is an earlier one, I was wondering...

Prime has been running while I do everything else, Torrents, browsing, music, even Super Pi too at the same time, as well as crunching for Teams Discovery AND Helix, all at once, no hitch.

I am up to, let me see now,

Test 1, 340000 Lucas-Lehmer iterations of M329727 using 16K FFT length. I don't understand all of these tests, but I am at somewhere between 19 and 24 hours of running it so far, and all is well.

Too bad AMD didn't keep developing BIOS for this.

you sure that bios wasn't around already for free? Buying a bios is like buying Grateful Dead bootleg's. It shouldn't happen.

But hey your system is running better so who am I to say!:o

MAN Almighty, that is an awesome analogy. I think I better find my CD American Beauty, man I love that one... I used to have a GF that went around with the dead for a few years, she was, well, quite independant, heh, and a lot of fun, and very bright, that she liked me was the amazing part...

Anyways, I started to wonder about that myself tonight: I wonder if there would be a way to look for it, but I don't know its' name etc... And a warez copy, hmmm... Could be risky.

Thank you! I had seen that page, but overlooked that it had a download, I glanced past it too fast. I have downloaded it and will try later.

It would be so nice if I could just get above 2800. I am at 2760 now, which about what a lot of guys get, but I have read of people getting plenty more with a 4800, so...

Maybe after I lap my XP-120 and change thermal compound that might help too...

I am going to order a lapping kit online in a few weeks. That said, I wonder how much better a tuniq tower would be over this XP-120...

I have a spare BIOS chip here, so if things go awry, I will be "safe".

you could go down to your local auto parts store and pick up some wet/dry sand paper. That is how we lapped before lapping kits came out as I am sure you rmemember. Lapped my 3.2c to a copper shine!

It will be cheaper for me to order online. There is no local auto parts store, heh. The closest one is over 1/2 hour away from here, and it sucks! I live in the boonies. If I get a ride to town, though, I will keep it in mind!
