| reply to Jedi Writer Re: How to rollback FireFox
Oracle, I've been lurking in the background, not wanting to throw in any more confusion, but I would like to ask a question, if you don't mind?
I'm not going to try to talk you into going back to Fx 2.0, so don't worry about that, this is just out of my own curiosity.
If you could, would you please tell, as best as you can, what type(s) of problem(s) you had with version 2?
This information could be useful to others in the future.
If you'd rather not, that's okay, too.
Thanks. -- I used to know all this stuff! |

1 edit | After upgrading to 2.0 if I try to play the MSN video player from a video link on the MSNBC website main portal page the player loads and starts to play by beginning to unfold the MSN Butterfly symbol at which point it stops and freezes. If I click on any of the video links associated with the player's menu there is no response. BUT if I click on the upper right hand corner of the frame of the frozen video player where it says "Get more videos" it takes me to archived videos that if I click on them the MSN video player plays them. And if I expand the library selection if it includes any of the videos that were listed on the frozen MSN video player they play.
And yes I've downloaded Flashplayer 9 and installed it, uninstalled it and reinstalled it and so on to no effect.
All that changed was the upgrading to FireFox 2.0 which simultaneously coincided with the problem I've described.
I've since succesfully gone back to Firefox 1.5x but the same problem exists so I guess I can no longer lay the blame at the feet of FireFox.
By the way I really like FireFox. My only compmlaint about it in the past was it seemed like they were upgrading it every two weeks which required new plug-ins or extensions which was a hassle. They could make the upgrade a lot easier and user friendly IMO.
But overall I definitely preferred it to IE which until FireFox I had used since about 1998. But the newer versions of firefox outperformed ie--BUT IE 7 IS A BIG IMPROVEMENT OVERALL TO IE 6. IT HAS BUGS OF COURSE. AND WHY YOU MAY ASK AM I SHOUTING--I AM NOT--MY KEYBOARD IS ACTING UP AND WILL CORRECT ITSELF AFTER I REBOOT. (I HOPE)
Yep, reboot and all is well. |

| LOL about your keyboard...
Thanks for your reply. I'll admit that playing video's, or not playing video's, I should say, has been one of the more popular topics here.
I'm sorry to hear that going back to 1.5.x.x didn't fix your problem.
If you'd like to try Fx again sometime in the future, feel free to post back and we'll try to help.
Thanks again for your reply. -- I used to know all this stuff! |

| reply to Jedi Writer The earliest versions of FireFox definitely often did not like it if you upgraded over the top of the old version. It wanted you to uninstall and do a new fresh install --but that seemed to cease to be a problem as the versions moved past 1.0 or thereabouts.
It is only the current version that I've had any problems it is probably not directly a FF problem--but who knows.
It definitely would be an improvement on the upgrade process if they made it so you didn't have to reinstall, search for or have rendered inoperative all the plug-ins or extensions, etc. It would be nice to have it a modular package. |

I quite imagine we'll see the easier uninstall/reinstall procedures in the future as Firefox evolves. | reply to thewolfman I wanted to roll back also, my problem was that I could not find old copies of Firefox ANYWHERE!
Eventually I just ran 2.0 through the install process again and it was fine.
The original problem was that it would not open any links that I clicked on. Reinstalling fixed that.
It also wanted to open new windows as tabs, a trip to 'Options' fixed that. Seems to be fine now. |

| reply to Jedi Writer As stated by Oracle, there seems to be an issue with the MSNBC page and Firefox.
Going to the site with firefox display the same symptoms. I noticed that the media player did not draw properly and is missing the active content to the right; also the volume slider is only partly drawn.
Everything works fine if View in IE tab is selected; indicating that it may be an issue with code rendering compability. (MSNBC is known to take liberty with coding, however) |

1 edit | reply to Jedi Writer EDIT: I have the same problem but I also have IEtab installed and the page works fine with that.
I would presume that Microsoft purposly breaks the page for firefox users. -- Look who's talking. You haven't even peeled potatoes for the Military..........REPLY: Neither have Dick Cheney or Karl Rove !!! |

| reply to Jedi Writer said by Jedi Writer :I am strictly a go to add/remove programs and click on remove things like IE 7. Bingo it is gone. And in its place is IE 6 and with all the settings and bookmarks I had on IE 6. Is the original question about "rollback" vs. "uninstall/reinstall"?
I haven't read every word or every post in this thread (I tend not to do that when things get nasty). So I apologize if this has alrady been covered.
With things like Firefox (a non-Microsoft product), you "uninstall" them and then "reinstall" them later if you want. After an "uninstall", you have nothing. Not the previous version, just nothing. The program is no longer there. If you want it there, or a previous version of it, you must "reinstall".
Microsoft has this concept of "rollback". When you get rid of the newer version, there remains the older version staring you in the face. There are probably two reasons for this. (1) Microsoft does not want you to get rid of their program, so steps are taken to keep it installed in some manner. Or (2) The program you are trying to get rid of, IE7 for example, is so tightly intertwined with the OS that you simply CANNOT get rid of it. Doing so would destroy the OS. So instead of a normal "uninstall", Microsoft has to provide a "rollback" instead, so you have some semblance of functionality left in your OS. Critics have argued that this "tight intertwining" is intentional, but unecessary, and intended as a way to maintain control. That is a different topic for a different discussion.
I don't imagine that there are too many non-Microsoft products that have a "rollback" capability. There are some of course, but I don't think it's the norm. |

| reply to Jedi Writer get foxmarks »www.foxmarks.com/ it is an extension for firefox that saves with 1 touch of a button, all your bookmarks. It stores them online and you can synch up at anytime. It will auto save them to the server also, so you never will lose your bookmarks. you can also access your bookmarks from the foxmark website without having to add them to whatever browser you are currently using if you do not want to.. |

1 edit | reply to Jedi Writer He is a simple way if nobody already typed it. Pick organize bookmarks then go to file and pick export ok save the file to where ever you want. Now uninstall new firefox and install old one follow same steps as above but pick import and look for the file it made and boom your bookmarks are back.
Also not to sound like a retard but how do I remove that search thing in the top right ? I looked for the option but must have missed it. |

| reply to AB The problem with MSNBC's MSN video player has never had a problem with Firefox until this past week or two. It has worked perfectly with Firefox until just recently. The only question is there a connection between Firefox 2.0 and MSN video--it appears after a lot of trouble shooting that it does not. Therefore, what is causing the problem?
I for one, even though I am not a corporate fan of MS, I think it unlikely that there is anything going on with MS and MSNBC for a variety of reasons.
The proof is are the people at BBR who can view without any problems with MSN videos on the front page or main portal page of MSNBC with any version of Firefox. If there are then we have a mystery that may lay within the individual user's computer and its configuration.
Whatever the truth, I wish that the videos played. I like Firefox. |

Are you using Adblock or the NoScript extension? If so, it's probably a Flash setting there, or you need to allow the tracker "atdmit" (in both Adblock and NoScript), or both. If not, then it may well have to do with the fact that Firefox 2.0 no longer supports SSL 2.0 web pages, which msnbc.com may very well use.
Sorry, but I'm not going to go there personally and disable everything to check this out myself. They (much like Fox News) are just not offering anything that I want to see that badly. And if they want to load a bunch of crap on my machine just so I can watch a video, well . . there are other sources. The phrase is "vote with your mouse". But best of luck to you, and I'll be happy to help in any way that I can, although I don't know how much more help I might be able to offer. |
