Seriously people, its time to get off the internet if you don't know common sense email practices.

Though common sense seems to be in decline, i guess it comes to the internet eventually. :P
While I agree, the majority of spam people get is brought on themselves, I have to wonder about Gmail. I made an account there to use as a temp storage, but then ended up not using it. So about a month later, I remembered I made the account, logged in, and the spam folder had 20 messages in it. Tell me that's not fishy. I never used the address, never gave it to anyone, and it wasn't something you would just guess either.

So that just shows you sometimes you don't have to do anything to get spam.

I looked at some headers (a friend of mine) once, there were 26 addresses on it - CASmith thru CZSmith. And I have seen the same thing on two of my accounts that use initials and last name. Nothing like a sequential name generator to get full coverage.

MMm that is fishy, I've had a gmail account for a long time now and never had any spam. Maybe they just recycle no longer used ones and you picked it up that used to get spam?

If one would pick a username with a bunch of numbers added to it, then it would be very difficult for a spammer who sends to every combination of letters to guess.

Gmail is great for eliminating most of the spam (it goes to the spam folder, not the inbox). I freely post with my (fake) email address (my username does not follow the above advice) and pick up 50 or more spams a day with maybe one or two making it to the inbox. Gmail makes it easy to report those few as spam.
