New Feature: Grouped Test Results

justin See Profile has added an interesting new feature that allows test results to be grouped. As an example ATT Midwest forum members in IL have grouped together their results, »/testhistory?view=1 . If done properly it can make finding large area problems very easy to identify and if people are searching for service they can see in general what they might expect in a certain region.

Right now mods can create new groups and invite anyone who wishes to share their results in public. I started one for this forum »/testhistory?view=3 but have not invited many members. I was just trying to figure out how this works. As you can see it is not very interesting unless people are getting their line monitored. And well it cost tool points to do that.... Until now. Anyone who participates in a grouped test history will get free line monitoring as long as they stay in a group, you can also be in multiple groups.

So I would like to establish some groups. I have one started for the Southwest region in the link above, but if I get enough interest I would like to start one for each state, and for certain urban areas we might even be able to get more specific.

If you are interested in being in a group and would like to have a line monitoring service free »/schedule please post here and I will add you to the forum group. Depending on the response I may create some additional groups.

Questions, thoughts comments please respond. You can either IM me or post here for invites.

Count me in! I used line monitoring for a couple of years but turned it off several months ago to keep from running totally out of tool points. Sounds as if the group idea will be a real help in showing up area-wide problems...

You are invited. The only thing I ask is if you are interested try out the Line Monitoring tool on the site. It is a very nice tool and hey it will be free now. It may be a bit tricky with the PPPoE. If you have questions about how to do it after going through the FAQ, you might try asking in the »Site Tools forum as I imagine there will be an increasing number of questions there about it.

It would be nice if a PPPoE line could be monitored by simply supplying a domain name for those already using a router to update their chosen DDNS host. There is Line Monitor FAQ dealing with this question/problem: »Line Monitoring FAQ »Can I supply a domain name for monitoring instead of an IP address? that promises that this capability would be implemented real soon. That was promised about four and a half years ago.

If this capability was available, I think many more people might sign on to the group.

No argument from me. Perhaps a large additional Dynamic IP population might get some changes to the tool. For me though I learned how DDNS worked from the Line Monitor. Weired, but now I have my family and friends I help support all on a DDNS domain. Pretty handy.

nm, sorry - just read that it doesn't work with DDNS. Plus I'd have to leave my router "pingable" all the time, right?

It does not use a domain name, however if you are running a DDNS client on your computer you can add another entry for DSLR and that will work. Yes it does work with pinging, but that is not much of a bad thing.

Thanks! Got it working with DeeEnEs running on my and the wife's PCs - it's quite nice. Got my first weekly summary the other day

I'm sure we can handle this responsibly, just like the mature adults that we are. Isn't that right, Mr Poopipants?
