Members Only - Grouped Line Monitoring

justin See Profile has been busy with adding some neat new features behind the scenes.
One of these is the ability to form 'groups' for the purpose of Line Monitoring. If you're not familiar with the Line Monitor - think of it as 24x7 Line Quality testing. Your IP gets 'pinged' from each of the 3 BBR test servers, and the results logged.

Here are a couple of examples
New York TriState
BellSouth

The hardest part of setting it up is using a tool like DeeEnEss to feedback your Dynamic IP address to the monitor, and even that is simple.

I thought this might be useful/helpful for RR users, especially with the transition issues that have surfaced.

I can create multiple groups - so I was thinking about one for Texas, one for SoCal, one for Ohio....since these are the geographies that seem to attract the most posts...but others can be set up as well.

Please post here *ONLY* if you are interested in setting up a Line Monitor as part of a group, and include what part of the country you are in - like this:
*SIGN*
San Diego, SoCAL

Here's a link to the very comprehensive Line Montoring FAQ

Oh, and for people who participate in a group, justin See Profile has waived the fee - it's FREE

I'm already in the New York Group, so if you want to fit me in another group as well, go right ahead!

If there's enough response for a New York RR group, you're in.

I'm anticipating that this will take off, so 3 groups have been created:
RR_TEXAS
RR_NYNJ
RR_OHIO

and each of the people who responded has been sent an invitation.

You will need to get your Line Monitor set up (see the FAQ LINK in the 1st post). Also, add something to your "My Home Connection" section of your PROFILE+ page.
You can see mine here. (Very bottom left of the page.)

Once that's all done, accept the invitation, and you should be all set.

I used the DeeEnEss client - here's a couple of tips.
Select dslreports.com from the drop down 'SERVER' list.
The HOST NAME it needs is not your BBR user account id, but the account number of the monitor once you've got it set up.
Then enter your DSLR Username and password. That should be all it takes.

Call me slow, but I can't find a way to access the group. Mind linking it from the forum or posting it on your original post?
Thanks!

How about my area, North San Diego County?
How many do we need to be a group?

it is slim picking for my area, I think there maybe a dozen or so people that lurk here from my area..

I'll set it up, but North San Diego is a tad limiting. It'll be called RR_SOCAL

That would be great

but... that's would be bit misleading, we are not in the SoCal group. That would be Los Angeles area, 100 miles North of me and maybe Orange County 50 miles North of me, and Riverside/San Bernadino Counties.

That's what I tried to explain.

I understand that.

Just like I'm not creating separate groups for Austin/San Antonio/Dallas in Texas, which are hundreds of miles apart.

If the demand gets to the point where there are lots (30 or 40?) of members, and there are enough to split them into more distinct geographies, I will.

In the meantime, this will give each individual user some interesting statistics if they need to contact RR support.

I don't know the Road Runner advertised speeds, I have looked and searched and even asked them on the phone, and cannot get an answer, so I just put what I am getting in places when asked..

currently it is/was 3800/350
==========

*Up to 3 times the speed of DSL claim is based on Road Runner's standard maximum download speed of 5.0 Mbps versus the standard DSL package’s maximum download speed of 1.5 Mbps. Speed comparison is based on a typical DSL package and may vary by area. Dial-up speed comparisons are based on Road Runner’s maximum download speed of 5.0 Mbps versus the average of a 28k and 56k modems’ maximum download speeds. Actual speeds may vary.

The standard package has been 5/512 - I'd suggest using that as your 'maximum' speed.
