If you read the Elise forum thread, you will see that the general consensus is that the car should be written off. The fact that they used the wrecker to winch it down and used the front suspension to hook onto is not good..... the hole in the floor is another bad thing... the floor panel is part of the chassis and not replaceable.

| Re: death of a Lotus Elise While I agree that what happened to that car isn't a good thing in any way shape or form, I dont see the straps on the frt suspension as the worst idea in the world.
If the car is really that light in the frt end (as evidenced by rolling backward off the hoist), then there wouldn't be that much force on the straps. I dare say that 3 strong people could support the car in that position while the hoist is lowered, then "roll" the frt end down toward the ground. -- Overheard: "I could careless matter of Fact"

| Happened to my brother-in-law a few years ago with his Dodge Ram. Thing was totaled. This happened at the same dealer that had just re-opened their garage a few months before after burning it (and a number of customer's cars) to the ground. | Re: death of a Lotus Elise said by Ry :What disturbs me about that owners post is how calm he sounds about the whole thing. I would have literally murdered everyone in that garage! I dunno. My car is hardly exotic, but it is fairly rare. Since it's not the only one, and I know that isn't the only Lotus Elise around, it can be replaced. Due to the hyper-exotic construction techniques used in the Lotus, it does look like a total loss.
I would be a bit perturbed by their incompetence and inability to follow instructions, but murder is a bit much. Either way, being upset isn't going to get the car replaced any quicker, and a calm person will probably get a bit farther with their insurance than a raving lunatic.
At the end of the day, it's a car, meant to be driven. They all are. And driving is going to cause wear, tear, and even a bit of damage. Nature of the beast. Sure, it sucks when someone else's stupidity causes your car to get damaged, but it's still only a car. It can be fixed or replaced.
My Mercedes S-class got totaled a few years back, and I was more put out about having to go through the paperwork and assorted BS than I was about the car getting wrecked. It's a car. And I had just put a new transmission into it. I actually explained that calmly to the adjuster (for the other party's insurance), showed him a receipt, and he made an appropriate adjustment to their compensation. I got what I thought the car was worth, so I was happy, and able to replace it with an even nicer car.
As long as they rent him something roughly equivalent in the meantime, he should be fine. (Actually, he mentioned a Porsche of some sort as a back up, so he's obviously not suffering for cars. It does stink that he won't be able to take his Lotus to the Lotus event her organized.)

@rr.com | The car is scrapped.
That particular Lotus is glued (bonded) together with the floorpan being the main chassis member. (kindly note the orange blobs of glue under the front suspension areas).
It cannot be repaired. | |

| Taking any car you care about to a chain is just plain retarded. Just as well it's totaled, they probably already used an impact on the lug nuts, tightened them sequentially at 150psi, put the wheel weights on the outside and scraped the rims on the tire changer. I've come to the conclusion that the exotic market is driven by people with money who want to look "cool" and don't know or care about cars. This guy doesn't know jack about cars. | |
