Saw that. I was somewhat on the fence between AT&T and VoiceWing, and one of the two factors that made me choose AT&T was that they showed the way to use the house wiring. VW recommended multi-phone systems. I didn't know whether to take this to mean that VW's TA was incapable of driving more than one phone, or Verizon didn't want their customers mucking with the house wiring. Turns out that the Verizon installer said there would be no problem with using the house wiring. At that point in time, I had decided on AT&T, since I read several reports regarding echo with VW. I'm glad that AT&T has the competition; it brought the price down :>)

Valid point. Fortunately, I bought the house new 5 years ago, and did the jacks myself so I have Cat5 jacks and Phone jacks everywhere I wanted them. However, for someone who isn't familiar with a house's wiring, this is a good thing to check. I was a a little surprised that ATT provided info with the installation instructions on disconnecting the POTS line so all the phone jacks would work. Other VOIP providers I looked at said buy an expandable cordless phone in their FAQ's.

most newer phones work even if the polarity of the jack is reversed, but if you ever have trouble with a phone not working, or nothing working when you plug in an old phone, try checking the polarity of the jacks in the house. I did mine exactly as you described, and it reversed the polarity on all the jacks. Being somewhat anal, I reversed the leads on the jack that I plugged the TA in to, and the polarity on all the other jacks was correct.
