Turns out that the Verizon installer said there would be no problem with using the house wiring. At that point in time, I had decided on AT&T, since I read several reports regarding echo with VW. I'm glad that AT&T has the competition; it brought the price down :>)

Valid point. Fortunately, I bought the house new 5 years ago, and did the jacks myself so I have Cat5 jacks and Phone jacks everywhere I wanted them. However, for someone who isn't familiar with a house's wiring, this is a good thing to check. | most newer phones work even if the polarity of the jack is reversed, but if you ever have trouble with a phone not working, or nothing working when you plug in an old phone, try checking the polarity of the jacks in the house. I did mine exactly as you described, and it reversed the polarity on all the jacks. Being somewhat anal, I reversed the leads on the jack that I plugged the TA in to, and the polarity on all the other jacks was correct.
