People said the same thing about Windows XP and that they would stick with the 9x world or Win2k.

Yes and XP got pretty good - after the 1st service pack.

Win 98 (DOS series) to Win 2000 (NT series) was a big improvement. Even NT4 to 2000 (= NT 5.0) was a significant improvement. Windows 2000 was the high point of Microsoft's history.

XP (= NT 5.1) performs as well as 2000 only on better hardware and only with a lot of the unnecessary services and features turned off. Its functional improvements over 2000 are few and are not critical.

For Vista (= NT 6.0) to perform as well as XP or 2000 on the same hardware is laughable. Only on *much* better hardware can it be as fast. And when you turn off the frivolous GUI stuff and unnecessary services, is there any real improvement over XP? A few new features, not critical.

Then there's more DRM, stricter activation requirements - IMHO, it's for diehard fans only, and those who have to use it for games or work.

Absolutely RIGHT! Nailed it!

Smart SysAdmins kept production machines and office equipment on Win2k till XP/2k3 matured (at least a year)... Same will have to be said about Vista. If Microsoft didn't strap DX10 onto Vista, then it would have nothing substantial at all over XP, other then some eye candy. After all, by the time DX10 games start to come out, along with DX10 Video cards, that's hopefully when Vista will mature enough for us to start considering an upgrade...

Still, doubling my RAM just so Vista can run strict DRM and monitor my activities, will be a tough pill to swallow.

I'm a full-time programmer and power user, and I still use 98SE without any problems. I've been using the same base set of files since 1996 -- installed 98 on top of 95 and 98SE on top of 98, copied everything to a new hard drive 4 or 5 times, switched motherboards/CPUs/cases twice and moved the existing hard drives over. I haven't reformatted or reinstalled in 10+ years. I use this PC 12+ hours a day and everything still runs smoothly, with a rare crash maybe once every 3 or 4 weeks. You just need to know how to maintain a computer. I'll upgrade only because Microsoft dropped Windows Update / patch support for ME and earlier, and newer versions of some apps such as Acrobat Reader and Media Player no longer work with 98 (they would probably run just fine but the companies don't want to support an older OS).

XP = 98 + a default theme with huge, ugly title bars and buttons that anyone with sense would change anyway

Um....no...not even close.

While I despise the draconian DRM crap in Vista just as much as the next sysadmin, your statement is utter rubbish, and I pity the people who depend on you for their system administration.

How can you say:
I'm a full-time programmer and power user, and I still use 98SE without any problems
and then say

and I still use 98SE without any problems
???????????? If you are still using 98 then you aint much of either

Just like any restaurant that refers to itself as "a fine dining establishment" isn't, anyone who refers to themselves as "a power user", isn't one.

Funny that the MS bashers are striking up the band already, based on nothing. I've used Vista Ultimate--the official RC1 from the customer review program DVD--on a less-than-optimal laptop (2.2 GHz, 1 GB system RAM, 16 MB video RAM) and the only thing that slowed it down is the lack of proper video space. The functionality, however, is all there.

But, you'll never shut up the anti-Microsoft trolls...so just hit "ignore".
