 High ping times to sprintlink.net

A picture is worth a thousand words :(
I have been getting very inconsistent ping times lately. I ran a traceroute to several locations and all of them mess up at hop 4:

Tracing route to dslreports.com [209.123.109.175]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 2 ms <1 ms 2 ms 192.168.0.1

So pardon my uber noobness but is there anything I can do? Ping times are so bad I can't play UnrealTournament!

Umm... that's interesting... your location in your BBR profile says Johnson City, TN... however, your tracert tells me you're somewhere in central NC and that you're connected through the Rocky Mount, NC backhaul.

What you're seeing is periodic loading issues in the Rocky Mount uplink to the internet. They've been popping up on occasion. Usually during peak periods.

Here's mine at the moment - 9:34pm EST, 11/20/2006:
  2 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms nc-76-0-144-1.dhcp.embarqhsd.net [76.0.144.1]
3 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms crncrcmt03 [69.69.52.210]
4 239 ms 239 ms 238 ms sl-gw9-rly-6-0.sprintlink.net [160.81.19.1]
5 225 ms 224 ms 216 ms sl-bb23-rly-3-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.14.37]
6 204 ms 199 ms 199 ms sl-bb21-dc-13-0-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.9.214]

7 178 ms 172 ms 165 ms sl-st21-ash-10-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.20.148]

I know Embarq has been working on plans for the future backbone connections on their network. Don't know exactly which links they've been working on.

This is partly a Sprintlink issue - not enough backhaul at this particular uplink to carry the load. And it's partly an Embarq issue - for not buying more backhaul from Sprint (or someone else).

BUT... Don't expect any major changes anytime soon. Embarq's stated engineering guideline is anything under 400ms is acceptable. Might not be palatable to you as a gaming customer but that's what you bought.

Remember, *all* consumer internet connections are a "best effort" service. If you expect service guarantees, go buy something else. Oh yeah that's right... everyone thinks a $50 connection is supposed to always perform the same as a $500 business grade connection. :uhh:

That's strange... I'm in JC Tennessee. Why whould it be showing my first hop in North Carolina?

I just did a speed test and I'm only getting 320kb/s on my 1.5Mb connection.

Ahh... you're just barely across the border. Guess they just backhauled everything back to NC since that's the closest thing to that market. Who was your local telco before Sprint took over? Was it Centel?

Waaay back before Sprint came to town it was United Telephone. Bell South is the only other company close to here but they don't go past Knoxville (72 miles away).

Kingsport here, most of this area has always went through NC past 2 years at least, below is my traceroute for comparison.

I'm not sure if JC is included but most of this area up into Bristol and down towards Johnson City used to be United Inter-mountain Telephone but the Sprint signage has been up for decade or so now.

United... wow that's a flash back.

FYI... Embarq is the union of Sprint Local, United Telephone and Centel. IIRC, Sprint Local became Sprint United when they took over United's service area. When they absorbed Centel, it became just "Sprint" for marketing purposes.

Now back to your original issue. Looks like the evening rush hour is over. Ping times are back to normal. I've seen it happening during most peak periods lately.

  2 8 ms 9 ms 8 ms nc-76-0-144-1.dhcp.embarqhsd.net [76.0.144.1]
3 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms crncrcmt04 [69.69.52.214]
4 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms sl-gw19-rly-4-3.sprintlink.net [160.81.74.177]
5 14 ms 14 ms 14 ms sl-bb23-rly-3-1.sprintlink.net [144.232.14.41]

Until Embarq adds either more backbone bandwidth from Sprint or adds another major peer to the internet, I don't see it getting better.

PS... I'm on the 5mbps package on a AFC remote. So I'm on FastPath. My numbers will be lower than your interleaved circuit by default. But your first hops are as expected on an interleave connection.

I guess this isn’t uncommon. I am in south central Pennsylvania about halfway between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia but my IP appears to be out of Ohio.

Regarding sports coverage I am considered in the Baltimore/Washington area. The NHL streamed some preseason games over the internet, but one had to be in the local area to see it. They check by IP address and thought I was in Ohio, so I was out of luck. A bit irritating.

Dang... Those are good ping times! I've been reading around on FastPath. Anyone know if it may help me some? Can I get it enabled on my 1.5M line? *scratches head on the whole fastpath thing*

Sprint/Embarq just plain sucks! They could care less about their clients. 400ms is NOT acceptable period by any means, hell even Cable gets better then that. There is sooo much loss and stuff on Sprint/Embarq it just isn't worth it anymore. It was this same way when Embarq was Sprint, so Sprint most likely doesn't have any extra to give Embarq. Until more people start reporting them to the FTC and your local Government for their shabby service and not providing what is being paid for, then it will go on and continue to get worse as they sell and add even more clients to an already overloaded system!

Well after doing some reading (thanks dslr) I called about fastpath. I explained that I'm on VoIP (which I am) and I want to get my ping times down. I asked her if I could have fastpath enabled which from what I've read, means that they turn interleave off.

She spoke with an engineer who told her that they can not turn off interleave. So then I asked her if they can lower the delay and she said yes! Supposedly the tech is going to lower the interleave delay so that I may get better times to my first hop. I'm getting about 60ms with DSL, I got about 20 with Comcast.

Fastpath is not going to help the problem you are seeing. The issue you are experiencing is the same thing I am. It is due to line congestion (not enough bandwidth). They have way oversold their bandwidth in many areas and keep selling even more, so expect it to get worse before better. I have been fighting for over a year now. Mine are great and low until they hit HOP 4 and then if not that one any CHI or ROA hops. I typically only have 9ms to my first hop, then it goes anywhere from 40-60ms on a good off peak night to as high as 500ms+ during peak hours. Speeds also drop from 5M/640K to 1.5M/128K or 3M/384K.. basically being throttled down during peak hours.

Had to get rid of our VOIP, we could no longer use it except at like 1-4am and sporadicly throughout the day, but come 3:30-4pm and the throttle downs start and the pings shoot 300-500ms, but I fear here shortly Embarq will raise the within limits from 400ms to 500ms very quickly. It was anything above 100ms, then 200ms Sprint did, then Embarq did 300ms, then a few months and already now 400ms. Makes it useless to play any games, no VOIP, no downloads and less they are restartable since it drops off all the time. We have been testing Cable out here for a little now and it has been 1000000000000000x better then Embarq DSL so far. During peak hours some bottlenecking still going on but nowhere near the extent of Embaq's DSLow.

Beat you, lol. Of course, this is off peak hours. I've noticed alot more people having problems in online games with other ISP's lately. More and more game servers are having packet loss issues and it's not centered to one specific location or one's ISP or game hosting company. Servers in Chicago, servers in NY, different people on different ISP's, cable/dsl, etc...etc.

Mabye there's a bigger problem outside the ISP's own networks? I've also noticed that webpages haven't been snapping up as quickly as when I first got Sprint DSL - even though I'm still on FastPath. But I assume that's mainly a DNS server issue...? Rip out the entire internet, it's all junk to 2006 standards, and rebuilt it all from the ground up, lol. We need to get congress to sign a no-lag treaty...lol.

Comcast blowing me away
DSL----->

How did you get on Fastpath? They told me they couldn't do it for me unless I was having synch issues. I don't know if I believe them but this is what they told me.

[edit] added pics... The tech supposedly reduced my interleave delay last night at about 12:30 am. I didn't notice an immediate difference so I logged onto the modem to look around (that's when it shows all the packet loss). After playing with it some more including resetting it out of bridge mode and hooking my computer up to the modem directly I got no difference. Ping times to dslreports were 50 before and after he reduced the delay. My first hop stayed at about 40ms before and after.

Maybe this is as good as I can get. I would love to get 6ms ping times to the first hop but like was said I'm in Tennessee and the first hop is in North Carolina. Maybe it's too far away to get any good pings? I dunno...

Attached is my DSL line test and a friends Comcast test to compare the two. He is running quicker and more consistent by far. To make matters worse, I know Comcast has oversold internet in his area. He gets HUGE bottlenecks when peak hours hit. (Lives around the university)

Is there any thing I can do? Can I get on fastpath somehow? Would it even make a difference, 'cause reducing the interleave delay (if he even did it) didn't make any difference?
