Birolo join:2005-04-24 Woodstock, GA | [Speed] Purpose of Powerboost Hi,
I have been wondering about the purpose of powerboost, is it just for testing? It only takes a few seconds and goes back to the regular speed. Only have a chance to download a couple of High resolution pictures. Anyone knows? |

It's Comcast's smoke and mirrors method to trick the most popular speed test sites (with their rather small Download files)to yield results that may make the average Subscriber believe that they have an above average connection. |

or, to be more mature about it.
for downloads under 40ish megs, it gives you double your rated bandwidth. which, in my opinion is quite useful at times.
also, what harm is it doing? it's free. can't really complain about free speed. would people be happier without it? not really. does it give people an unjustified reason to complain? yes. |

I doubt the smart folks at Comcast did not anticipate the potential PR boost that would come from speed tests results and the possible misinterpretation of those results from customers not familiar with PoweR Boost .
As to the OP's question, only Comcast knows for sure. Perhaps it's just a stop-gap measure until they are able to roll out the next upgrade. It is what it is. A bonus.

 | reply to Birolo It also works on the theory that it is better for the network to have things done quicker. Better for shorter sessions at higher speeds rather than longer ones at slower speeds.

Right. Because everyone in the Comcast higher-up club knows that all of those speed tests are so accurate to begin with.
Bottom line:
1. Powerboost does nothing but improve your DL time 2. Powerboost = Free 3. Discussing Arguing about this (AGAIN) = beating a dead horse. |

My buddy moved to Service Electric Territory (smaller cable system in PA). He said, "I wish we could get Comcast out here, the PowerBoost was awesome." So he's stuck with 5M/512k.
So yeah, people notice, and it does help. Even for those graphically intensive websites, and theme sites (with backgrounds, etc). |

I agree with you! With many other ISP users getting upgrades and Verizon's FIOS being deployed, "powerboost" is just buying Comcast time to upgrade their systems to handle the capacity. I believe that Comcast is preparing to battle with Verizon when the time is right. |

NerdtalkerWorking Hard, Or Hardly Working?Premium,MVM join:2003-02-18 Tucson, AZ | reply to Birolo I think powerboost is pretty novel. It's network throttling deployed on a large scale. For once, Comcast might've been the first to market with something that other cable ISPs will eventually implement. Additionally, it does make sense to get traffic out of the way quickly (if the bandwidth is sitting around), and not keep a steady stream of traffic going for a long period of time.
Increasing the perception that speeds are faster with Comcast vs. X ISP is the key here, and, if this is as good as it looks like it is, they've succeeded. It's really a surprising concept. I wouldn't know, my market is still waiting for some reason. -- "Some people never see the light till it shines thru bullet holes." -Bruce Cockburn

 | reply to Birolo I thought it was originally pretty useless but once I got it, downloading smaller files was amazing. Or high resolution Images.
Yet even for huge ass files (see BF2142 demo), a few seconds of insane speeds really takes a bite out of the time. -- Serenity Day - June 23rd 2006. You Can't Stop the Signal |

well, insulting as it may be. you failed to answer the OP's original question. instead you decided to vent your own frustration/opinion about the service. what would you call it?
instead of stating what it did, you used it to voice an opionion which the OP was not interested in hearing. if someone wants to get your type of post, they'll ask for opinions instead.
on the other hand i ANSWERED the question as to what it did, as well as state a small opinion with it.
hope this was not all that "insulting." |

How in the heck do you know what the O.P. was interested in hearing ???
And what in the heck is wrong with me posting my opinion so that others may view it, and then to judge it and decide whether they agree or disagree ???
Last time I looked, this was still America !!
Is there anything wrong with another perspective that may inspire others to "think" on their own two Feet ????

As long as my connection is stable, and I get my 8mbps that I'm paying for, they can crank it to 16-20mbps for as long as they wish! Even if it is only for a few MB... it just means that I will have to wait a little less time to get my file(s). -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |
