Say what?

Can we live without electricity in our society?
Not well at all.
Can we live without running water in our society?
Not well at all.
Can we live without trash/waste disposal?
Not well at all.
Can we live without broadband?
We can. We just have to rely on services like FED EX, USPS, UPS, dial-up, courier service, FAX, telephone etc, etc etc.

Broadband is a convenience. It makes things easier, attainment of data easier and just saves time.

Let the bashing begin!

You have a few misconceptions here
Power lines stopped at my home and did not continue my neighbor.

Can someone live with out municipal electric?
Yes they do quite well with a small generator, they use to recharge a battery bank, which primarily is used to run there computer network

Running water?
They do fine with a hand pump well, and a free flowing spring down the road.

Trash collection that is the least of someone’s worries in the country.

Net access That is the one they cannot live without, it is the only way they can be self-sufficient. Without which they would be on the public dole.
Dial up is the primary limiting factor to there home business
Broadband would be the path to all the others.

1 edit
comparing everyday necessities like electricity to broadband is ludicrous...

Most people in those countries can't even afford a computer...or a phone....or food, so shoving broadband down their throats is moot. Broadband isn't needed to live, even in the "civilized" world. Most in those countries aren't concerned about their "home business", they are just concerned about their homes...whether it's if their homes will survive the next flood or be overrun by Arab militias killing all the males...

If a country considers it a utility then let them hash it out, they certainly don't need the UN of all people telling them they must provide it. I am sure the UN would love to have control on how broadband is deployed too.

When you are an organization that puts countries like Sudan a place on the Human Rights Council, you loose what little credibility you had.

more importantly...I got to use ludicrous in a sentence...

Nothing is really "needed." It is getting to a point where Internet access is a "not well at all." The telecommunications industry is indeed a pivotal utility industry and broadband is "necessary" to survive in a global business environment in which others have broadband. It may be a luxury in the home (the same way the telephone and light are), but for businesses, it is safe to call broadband a utility.

Misconceptions? Not really my friend.

If they want to live by generated electric, pumped water and digging trash and sewage in the ground, that is their prerogative.

They have telephone service? Then net access is available.
No broadband? Yes, they can get broadband via satellite. Can they talk on a cellphone? Then it is possible wireless broadband access is available.

Wait, is it price of satellite broadband the limiting factor here? Well, with the rising cost of running that gas generator, they sure would be able to afford it if they had municipal or coop electric service. See? We have choices. Or is it that they WANT the cheaper prices the city dwellers pay for it? It does not work that way.

Would broadband help run a business better? Of course it will...hands down.

We make choices to either live the hustle and bustle of the city and suburbs or to live out in the nice quiet countryside, away from the daily mess and light pollution.

When we did not have broadband, we were slap happy with dial-up. But progress and conveniences are a beautiful thing that....not everyone can enjoy.

The bottom line is that broadband technologies have physical limitations, whether it is the cost of running a line or coax to a remote location or the signal attenuation of broadband over an extremely long transport.

The telcos/cable companies will not put forth the capital to run repeaters and long lines that cost more than the return they can get for a small customer base.

This clearly demonstrates that people go for broadband based on price (which is another can of worms).

People can live without broadband and make do with what they got, or they will have to pay for satellite broadband. It is that simple.

Broadband is not a utility, it is an oxymoron!

Wait! The article is about running a business with broadband services. Then, I guess cost should should not be a factor...

That, unfortunately, is the capitalist way, my friend.

Then being that the option, they should be able to afford a business package using satellite access.

I hear it everyday...telcos this, cable companies that, bla bla bla. We have choices and so do businesses. Pay for what you can get your hands on if you need it.

have you been to New Mexico or Wyoming recently? Who is arguing that utilities should be free? No one. However, if there is NO access, what option is there.

How do you define broadband? What is the median spread of satellite Internet? Do these things conflict?

The government though phone service was important enough to spread an initiative ensuring EVERYONE had access to phones. How is broadband essentially different?

Nuts

I think you make a great point. To many people are confusing ACCESS with PAYING FOR SERVICE.
