| FIOS and the removal of your copper
Has anyone challenged Verizon on the removal of the copper running to your home when fiber is installed?
I see no reason why you should allow Verizon the means of cutting you off from going back to a different provider.
BTW.. In the New York area, Verizon removes the copper going to your house when it installs your phone over fibre.. Is this happening only in NY???
Feedback please.... |

| I indicated to the installer that I would not let him remove copper and would even do w/o FIOS if need be. That was one year ago. It went very smoothly and I now have data-only FIOS, and voice on POTS. Others in NY have reported similar success. I tried to arrange it with the people who take my FIOS order, but I had to have the installer straighten it out which he nicely did.

| Yes I too have data only FIOS, but I want to move to phone and FIOS TV since it is now available in my area. Here lies the problem, if I go to phone over FIOS they will want to remove the copper... That would then tie me to Verizon for phone, and if I decide to change it would mean having to rewire the copper... and you know that will cost.
Anyone had any luck with keeping their copper and getting phone over FIOS??? |

Quite another, if you want to have service placed on it after FioS. |

| reply to BertDude They took down my copper after switching to FiOS even though it was only 5 months old ( a big truck took it down once, too .) And when FiOS TV comes along, I will have the cable coax drop removed as well. -- ~Help find a cure for Cancer~ ~Proud Member of Team Discovery ~ |

My guess is that Varizon treats the copper in each state differently.. again thanks... |

| reply to BertDude The copper issue has been all over the mat.
In the beginning, with underground feeds, Verizon was cutting the copper at the soil line. This seems to have stopped for now in my area??
Aerial drops are usually removed. Had a recent install that had 2 lines on different account. Installer almost removed copper aerial drop, then luckily realized there was a 2nd line on a different account.
From what I am hearing lately, Verizon will not allow you to keep your POTS on copper unless it is on a different account or a CLEC and you choose not to consolidate.
I guess for the folks that really want to keep the POTS on copper, they need to order FIOS in the wife's or kids name on a different account. It means writing another check, but if this is what you want, I guess it may work??

| reply to jfoj It seems logical to assume that one day Verizon is just going to cut all the copper on its network--after all the main point of FIOS seems to be (in addition to new network services) to cut down majorly on maintenance expenses.
In any event, the copper will oxidize at some point and Verizon probably doesn't want to be standing around to maintain copper plant for the next 75 years waiting for the last line to go. |

But it won't stop me from clinging to my copper line for a long as I possibly can. |

| reply to BertDude Just for the record, my initial question was not about consolidating the phone onto the FIOS... but being able to move to another provider (if necessary down the road) after Verizon cuts the copper out. My issue was Varizon making it difficult to migrate to another provider after going to FIOS. |
