Change ISP

Hi! I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to change my ISP. Not too long of a story. My so called fix-it guy did not give me my goods that I already pd. for and he has my ISP. I do not want anyone snooping and I do not trust him so how do I change it? I looked it up in troubleshooting but I don't understand it. One can change it by changing your MAC, media access control? Make it simple, please?

Who is your ISP?

Are you asking how to change your IP address? An ISP is the company you get your internet connection from.

BTW, Welcome to the forum and to the site.

ragdoll,

As sashwa noted, you are probably looking to change your IP address, rather than your ISP.

Whether or not you can change your IP address depends on the type of Internet connection you have. If you are on a dynamic connection, or you use PPPoE, then your IP address may change simply by reconnecting to the Internet. If you have a static connection, however, you will need to contact your Internet provider to have your IP address changed.

Hope this explanation helps, and let us know if you need any further assistance.

Re: Change ISP Michael

Hi Michael!

I realize that my ISP address is with my internet service but.... I don't know what the PPPoE is. In my ISP address changing by simply reconnecting. That's shutting down? I know I must sound like a dufus but this part of my computer I've never run into before. I am also on cable. I have only seen my ISP address once and that was when I got this new pc.
Can you help me?

Thanks

Without knowing your exact setup, it is difficult to say for sure what the exact procedure is, as it can be slightly different for a number of reasons. However, here are a couple things you can try:

1. Unplug the power to your modem for about 10-20 seconds, then plug it back in.

2. Click on your start menu, then click Run. Type in cmd and click OK. In the command window that appears, type the following:

ipconfig /release [press enter]
ipconfig /renew [press enter]

Either of these steps can be used to refresh your connection, and the ipconfig commands tell your computer to release it's current IP and then go out and request a new IP lease, which *should* do what you are asking.

If neither of these works, you may want to contact your ISP for further assistance. They can verify your settings for you and confirm if your IP has changed or not.

If can tell us who your ISP is, we may have a forum here for them. If we do I can move this over to that forum for you.

Re: Change ISP Micheal

I will certainly follow your instructions. It's easy enough but I would never know to do that.
Thank You!

Re: Change ISP Micheal

I believe this thread is done.

Ragdoll, You have been asked a couple of times who your internet provider (ISP)is so that I could move you to the right forum as this forum is for DSLExtreme members. You say you are on cable. DSLExtreme is not cable but DSL.

You can find a list of all our forums here: »/forums/all. If you are still having a problem, then you need to post in the correct forum so you can get the help you need.
