| reply to kidsafe Re: TiVo Delayed
Last I heard, Comcast doesn't charge extra for an HD box if you get their digital tier. Since I transferred my lifetime service from my old Series 2, it only cost me $1,000 total which seems reasonable considering the hardware in the machine. I'm only paying $5/month for 2 cable cards, but at least there's one less box I have to deal with in my home entertainment configuration, plus it allowed me to move the existing HD box to my other HDTV where I have a dual tuner Series 2. This way I can record up to 4 things (3 on digital cable, 1 analog) at the same time while watching a 5th pre-recorded show, the only problem is when's the last time there were 4 things on at the same time worth recording? |

Late 2007 is the timeframe for the deal with SA-Comcast for TiVo Software.
I would expect it more around Early to mid 2008 however. |

Wait I sec, I'm about to sign up for Comcast triple play with the dual tuner Motorala HD-DVR. Whatever the problems are, are they bad enough that I should hold off on signing up? |

No, what the article said is that sending the data over the cable infrastructure was a hurdle in the development of the Tivo software (they never had to do it before) but the tests were going well. |

| reply to nascar Relatively speaking, it should be "no big deal" since the i-guide is already delivered this way.
I would think the hurdle is more that the TiVo software probably has a larger footprint then the i-Guide and the 6412/3412 offer. A combination of hardware and RAM would be needed. Bottom line is the majority of the functionality will be there like the stand alone TiVo just that the code had to be rewritten to fit in the 6412/3412 architecture.
I'm looking forward to TiVo. The TiVo software is better written then the i-Guide and any one that has used TiVo knows it has many more features.
The TiVO/Comcast offering is one reason I plan to stick with Comcast and not jump to Verizon. But, rumor has it that once the software is established for the 6412/3412, Verizon will make the same deal with TiVo sometime in 2008. Verizon and TiVo have an agreement now that revolves around Verizon phones. -- Comcast of NJ II - Union/Verona |

| reply to mbernste said by mbernste :I know no one likes the idea of spending $800 upfront, plus service fees, You can get a Series 3 for about $650 from several on-line retailers. Dell had them for $600. If you have an older Tivo with Product Lifetime you have till 12/31 to transfer lifetime to the new device.
Here in Atlanta Comcast charges $1.50 for the second cable card. Not too bad.
Still more than I want to pay. |

| reply to nascar My Comcast bill just went up almost $15 due to their annual price hike, so I don't think I'll be wanting to add their TiVo service for ANOTHER $5-10. I'm getting really sick of these price increases, and it makes me even angrier to see that Comcast has absolutely NO competition in Chicago and many other areas, so consumers don't really have a choice in the matter. Something needs to be done. |

| reply to nascar I've reported multiple bugs and not one has been fixed.
My two main ones are:
When the unit turns on for a scheduled recording it shuts off afterwards, even if while it is recording you decided to watch a previously recorded program. This has happened since the 6412 and has continued with my 3412. It's been at least a year since I initially reported this.
My 3412 gives me an error code HW when the HD fills up. If I delete old shows it goes away, but I can't just let it fill up and delete old content as it needs the space without complaining - newer issue.
I just hope the tivo software is less buggy. I'll wait an extra couple of months if need be. |

This has happened since the 6412 and has continued with my 3412. It's been at least a year since I initially reported this. Don't turn the unit off. The power button on the DVR doesn't really turn the unit itself off, it only deactivates the video output. So you're not "saving electricity" or any wear and tear on anything by using it. That way, your recordings can start as they normally would, and you can still watch another channel or something already recorded without worrying about it shutting off again. |

Uhh, it also puts the hard drive into sleep mode thus you no longer hear the sound of the hard drive whirring as well. This is a big advantage when the DVR is in your bedroom and you are trying to sleep. |

scanpa Premium join:2006-09-06 Lebanon, PA | The HDD still runs even if the STB is placed in Standby (off) mode.
You can place both tuners on one of the 45 digital music channels and this will stop the buffering, but the HDD will still be on and spinning. |
