My TiVo DOES use CableCards.
It could also be connected directly to cable without CC's, and would pick up all the Analogs and every unen crypted Digital. But because cable companies move these channel numbers around, there isn't yet a way for the TiVo to provide Guide info for (and therefore make flexible, TiVo-interface recordings of) those channels. Manual recordings, like an old-school VCR, are, of course, possible. TiVo MAY listen to all the requests and allow for a flexible mapping schema to improve this interface to expected TiVo-quality levels, but they never announce these things - just push down an update someday 
You could also just use an antenna if you're within 50ish miles (check antennaweb.org) of metropolitan HD sources, and save TONNES of money by going with just basic/extended cable to the TiVo with antenna!
I wanted a bunch of the digitals anyway, and Comcast lets you drop as many tiers as you need and keep precisely what you want with a CableCard - so I got them. Setup was a bit of a hassle because my Adelphia was transitioning and had to switch to using a Comcast headend to authorize the CCs, but the (Adelphia) techs and (Comcast) phonereps worked at it, and set it up flawlessly on the second visit/attempt. Two total hours at home wit techs over two mornings.
It should all be a LOT easier now that Comcast has special instructions out and their system works flawlessly with CCs and S3 TiVos. See if our local headend provides Motorola Cable cards (easier to set up than Scientific Atlanta). Others have had flawless 5 minutes succesfull installs lately!
Oh, and I can do without OnDemand - I can barely catch up on watching whats in my Now Playing List (hard drive), what's the point of MORE programming I can't watch? |

How did you hook your Tivo up to comcast? Is there a way without using Smart Cards? The only thing that keeps me with Comcast is Ondemand. |

I hope I don't get that update, but if I do, and start having HDMI-HDCP issues, I will have been stretched beyond my tether of tolerance and WILL buy that second S3 HD TiVo I already only record inconsequential shows on my 6412 that I don't mind getting FIFO deleted when space runs out, and am overloading my not-yet-upgraded 30 hour S3 HD TiVo with all the shows I like or movies I plan to watch |

Well, I'm not alone. Between neighbors and family members, we all have problems except for my Mother. So out of 11 TV's, only 1 doesn't do this... the $400 special 36" plasma from Walmart, the rest of us range from $1900 to $6500. I'm pretty confident that all of our TV's are less than 2 years old. This problem ONLY started after the new guide update. It wasn't immediate, it was a few weeks later. When we switch the box out, the problem goes away for a few weeks. Then shows up every once in a while (at least once per day), then after a few days, happens every time the TV is turned on. The only way to stop it, is to turn the box off and quickly hit menu, then go to "restore to defaults". This is the ONLY way to get the all green screen or blue screen with the HDCP Protection error to go away. Unplugging/replugging the HDMI cable, playing a recording for a little while, power cycling the box doesn't work after awhile. While the P3's may have solved the HDMI problems before, the new guide has brought them back. Perhaps your switch is keeping the HDCP alive when you turn your TV off. |

The specific problem you are describing points to an inability )between the TV & 6412) to negotiate HDMI with HDCP.
Seeing as the 6412PIII seems to have fixed all the past HDMI problems with these units (and it works flawlessly with my small-brand HDTV, even through a cheap monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch), I'd lay the blame on your TV. What model/brand is it? Sony (and to a smaller extent Samsung & Toshiba) was notorious for inept HDMI implementations on some middle-aged HDTVs (1-3 years old) |

I just want one thing fixed... if I leave the box on and turn my TV off, when I turn my TV back on I get no audio and a completely green screen. If I go to the service menu (turn box off and hit menu), I get a blue screen with some message about HDCP Protection being compromised, use the Y Pb Pr connections. If I restore the default values, I can watch TV just fine again (until the next time I turn the TV off). Now, it happens no matter how I turn off the DVR and TV. I have a 6412 III hooked up through the HDMI port to the TV, the optical audio to my stereo, and the coax to my VCR. Could the multiple connections be the issue?
I doubt seriously that TiVo is going to fix ANY OF THIS. The problem seems to be more of the Moto hardware than the i-Guide software. |

It isn't like that is the only quirky "feature" in the program running these boxes. I've had three techs (who swapped out the previous 4 6412's I've had, now on the 5th one, a Phase III that still exhibits much of the same issues as the others) tell me that the power only deactivates the audio/video output. Even with power "off", I can hear the HD heads moving if I listen closely (this new unit has a much quieter drive than previous ones).

When you turn the box off (put in standby or whatever) it is not buffering. The hard drive may indeed be spinning but there is no writing going on. When the box is on, you can distinctly hear the drive writing. I have had this box for 2 years. I know (and can hear) the difference when it is on vs. off.
If what you are saying is true, why bother having a power button at all? |

The HDD still runs even if the STB is placed in Standby (off) mode.
You can place both tuners on one of the 45 digital music channels and this will stop the buffering, but the HDD will still be on and spinning. |

That way, your recordings can start as they normally would, and you can still watch another channel or something already recorded without worrying about it shutting off again. |

I've reported multiple bugs and not one has been fixed.
My two main ones are:
When the unit turns on for a scheduled recording it shuts off afterwards, even if while it is recording you decided to watch a previously recorded program. This has happened since the 6412 and has continued with my 3412. It's been at least a year since I initially reported this.
My 3412 gives me an error code HW when the HD fills up. If I delete old shows it goes away, but I can't just let it fill up and delete old content as it needs the space without complaining - newer issue.
I just hope the tivo software is less buggy. I'll wait an extra couple of months if need be. |
