[Extreme] BT Throttling on Utorrent 1.6 has resumed recently...

Hey all... I use Rogers Extreme and up until recently my bittorrent was running just perfectly when using Utorrent 1.6 with encryption on. I should mention that prior to using utorrent with encryption I was throttled and that the new utorrent had solved the throttling. Until now.

My quesiton is this, has anyone else noticed that this has stopped working? My bittorrent downloads are running fine, but utorrent seems to have lost the ability to have a global upload speed of greater than 15k/s. If anyone else has experienced a similar problem and has a workaround or if it's known that certain other clients will work now instead of utorrent 1.6 can you please offer some suggestions?

thanks
s.

I'm on Express and for the past 2 days, the downloads don't go over 30 kbps, no matter how many seeders. I use uTorrent.

Is this affecting your downloads? Usually its the upload traffic that gets squashed. Mine's been since I moved to Fredericton. Sometimes I can upload to a torrent at 30-40k (used to do 140), but downloads have been pretty good. Usually I clock in at 200-300k down (which is really down from the 700k-2M I got when I first torrented).

What about other kinds of traffic? Like ftp?

Everything else is fine. The upload rates are fine, for me at least. It's only that the downloads don't go over 30kbps.

my personal experience is that throttling affects upload speeds. my download speeds on bt are fine.

sunnyb: how many peers are on the torrent in question? slow download speeds may simply be reflective of too few people on the torrent.

so after playing around with different clients yesterday it appears to me that encryption makes no difference anymore. my friend has suggested that rogers is simply throttling all non-recognized (ftp, http, etc) tcp streams outbound at 15k/s. can anyone else corrobrate that? i think i'm going to try using encrypted ftp today and see if that gets throttled similarly.

It won't go above 30 kbps no matter how many seeders/peers there are.

I was downloading a movie with 268 seeders and a program with much less seeders and the speed is always 30 kbps.

Wasn't there a talk of Rogers also controlling the amount of connections a P2P client can make? So no matter if a torrent has 100 seeders, you may only be able to connect to 5, and be throttled to those as well.

Right now, I'm connected to 120 of the 404 seeders and the speed is between 28 to 31 kbps.

(Speed of this Torrent, Other May faster or Slower)

So, You get the picture....??

My exact same situation yet people refused to believe it months ago.

I had Rogers and Bell at the same time for a couple of days and had two identical PCs on each. Bell could download 400-500KB/s, while the Rogers crawled at 30KB.

If you use BT, Rogers isn't for you. I'd recommend using another ISP.

This is nothing at all new ... how many months have we been saying this? Sheesh.

@rogers.com

Actually, this is rather new, ever since the switch over to the new netblock. While Rogers has been throttling all along, this is the first that the old work-around has failed. I used to have download speeds up to 700KB/s, now I'm very, very lucky if I get near 200. Upload speeds rarely get above 10KB/s, and are much lower on most trackers.

Luckily for me, my bundling discount expired this week, so I've no incentive to stay around much longer.

how funny you get throttled and i get unthrottled and this has been happening to me month after month. It varies as to how long its on/off and there doesnt seem to be any real schedule to it.

Yes, same here, bye-bye Rogers. This is the first time for me being throttled in two years.

I don't get it? we paying our money to be throttled and capped?
i'm getting 3 kb/s upload and 300 kb/s download.....I will probably get banned from this tracker....
if i get banned from this tracker....i will say byebye to rogers for good.
Extreme was so good at the begining and then throttling, caps, highpings and other bs........
Rogers have some explaining to do.?
I bet they don't care.

Rogers have some explaining to do.?

They have explained numerous times ...

Here is a response to one user from Rogers (it's a boiler plate letter posted here several times in the last year or two)

That's why I leave Rogers. I am a long time customer
with Rogers (Before is Shaw) Cable Internet like
6-7 years already. Because Rogers give me &
my neighbor $hit, so right now, my area have DSL
finally, we all dump Rogers & join DSL together.
We are more happy with our internet entertainment
right the way!

Verizon is a Telephone company. Not a Cable company ... you're comparing apples and oranges. Throttling is done to ensure that your neighbourhood doesn't get bogged down.

Fios requires laying fibre to the home. We're a long way from that ... it's expensive at this time.

Back to sypatico next month.
I have no reason to stay with rogers.
