Re: should I bother with this?

You should be able to connect just fine with 63.0 db attenuation; though I would still look and try to see if it can get fixed. What service are you provisioned on? 256 kbit Lite, 1.5 mbit ultra, extreme 3.0/6.0, etc.? With a 63.0 db attenuation, I doube extreme 3.0 or 6.0 will be possible on that line; I know it's impossible on my line, even after my Westell tells me my attenuation is 58.5 db, whereas my 2 Wire reads 62.0-63.0 attenuation. Either way, I can keep sync through Ultra 1.5 mbit for weeks at a time, once I tracked it keeping sync over a month; with signal lost later due to a bad storm. My point is do what RJ44 said; if stats and signal are bad @ the nid, call up BST DSL tech. support.

Should it matter if I didn't actually have the connection drop on me at the NID, if the readings were the same?

Thanks in advance.

By testing at the NID you have shown that whatever the problem is, it exists on BST's side. Call the help desk and report your intermittent sync. There will be no charge to fix anything outside.

To your second question, it is possible although really unusual, that the tech could determine your line should have never qualified for DSL in the first place. I doubt they would disconnect your service if you agreed to live with the connection drops, but if you go calling every week for a tech visit and nothing can be done, eventually they may decide to disqualify you.

@bellsouth.net

We have had issues with our Fastaccess connection, which we just got last week. The connection drops out every once and a while. I've checked connection stats at both the normal jack and the NID. The issue, I think, is that the downstream line attenuation is at 63.5 db. It is the same at the jack and the NID.

»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How to check modem stats, synch rates & speeds from test jack at the NID. seems to indicate that I can call the help desk to request a line check. It then suggests that this can show whether it's Bellsouth's problem or not. And that if it is their problem, they'll send out a technician to fix it.

But »DSL FAQ »What troubleshooting can I expect during an install? seems to say that sync problems at the NID can lead to canceled service. Or does this only refer to while a technician is installing it?

Should I bother calling for a line check? Does a line check cost anything? If there is a problem, will they do anything about it?

Thank you for your help.
