Sipbroker (or similar) US Central Time talking clock

I am interested in getting a 'speaking clock' US Central Time number that is easily accessible via VoIP for free. Please post if you have something.

Sipbroker lists a few numbers for services for US (Eastern), Australia, and Ireland, and they work fine, but I don't live there.

Most that I found were 976 numbers that do not work from VoIP, but I did find one in Morris, IL that works:

First Midwest Bank, NA time and temperature announcement:

815-942-6900

Here is another in McHenry, IL:

815-385-9400

Both announcements are Central Time.

Milwaukee also has 414-844-1414.

Unfortunately none of those PSTN services are free for me.

I was looking for something like FWD's "612".

Thanks for the reply nonetheless.

I use both the short wave NIST stations which are "talking" but of course give out the time in (UTC) universal time. Also, I use the NIST HI, CO and the Naval DC PSTN numbers which are not toll free.

Also, I use the following NIST web site which is NOT talking but very accurate. There is some delay over phone lines and the internet:

You can change the setting to Central Time as I have it set for Eastern.

Hopefully another forum member will have what you need.

If you can call 800 numbers for free try 1-800-555-TELL (1-800-555-8355) and just say time. I think it uses caller id to give your local timezone. Could someone please test it and post. I am in central timezone and that is what it gave me.

It worked for Eastern for me. Thanks.

EDIT: From POTS it gave the correct time without stating "eastern". From my VoIP 800 line I had to say "eastern" to get the correct time.

That gives me central time from POTS and FWD, eastern for my New Jersey-based VoIP provider.

I love "TellMe"! But for some weird reason I can never remember their phone number correctly.

Even weirder is that if you call 800-555-1212 (toll free directory assistance, which is actually POWERED by TellMe) and you ask for the toll free number for "TellMe", it will NEVER give you that number! It keeps thinking I'm saying "Sony".

When I called Toll-Free DA and said both "Tell & TellMe" it thought I was saying TellVee which had no listing. Finally it said to hold for the next available operator - after a long wait I hung up.

I should have asked for Sony just to see what happened.

Not sure where they are located, but when I called using ViaTalk VOIP service, they gave me the correct Pacific time right away.

I have a local number to call that gives me the time as well, but this worked fine.

What I like about the FWD 612 service is that it's short and fast. I have it programmed into my ATA so all I have to do is dial "6" and within ten seconds I know the time. It's faster than the local time service, even speed-dialed, because there's less call setup time on VOIP, and less BS on the front end from the announcer.

Looks like my best option for central time is to put a clock in the garage. That's so 18th century, though.

At one time TellMe was quite customizable -- it would let you register your phone number so that it knew your preferences for all sorts of things. If they still do that, you should be able to have them remember your time zone that way. (Worst case is they'll end up classifying every call from your VoIP provider as you.)
