[FYI] Paint.net Better than Photoshop

You can get it totally free at www.GetPaint.net. It is the project of a bunch of university kids. You do need Microsoft .Net Framework to run it. It can turn your photo into a drawing, eliminate redeye, sharpen photo, etc.

It doesn't have all the templates Photoshop does but my pics come out perfect. And, it's FREE!

I found it while looking for a photo to drawing program. Has a detailed forum where users will tell you how to do anything with it.

You can also color B&W photos or drawings. I think it even renders png files too.

That sure does look like Paint Shop Pro which I have. I would have loved to have gotten it free if this program has as much to offer as PSP. I don't have PS so cannot compare it to that.

Curious . . . does Corel application installs still put mountains of garbage on your computer? I've considered purchasing PSP, but past bad experiences with Corel software and their AOL-like habits have always given me second thoughts.

Actually, there is NOTHING better then Photoshop on the market for Professionals, sorry to burst anyone's bubbles. I love Paint.net and GIMP as well but they both lack where the other paid softwares lack, in printing/prep for printing!! This is where Adobe PS excels and one of the main reasons it is the Industry Standard application.

Aside from the above the other programs still don't even come close to offering the flexibility and tools that PS offers for other editing as well.

They are much better for the hobbyist or amateur over PS yes, because they are FREE!! But for the Professional work flow there is absolutely no substitute for PS until these other programs get more in depth and offer the proper tools needed for prep.

Near as I can tell, it's usually the people who can't or don't know how to use Photoshop, that say another program is better than PS. Come on, NOTHING free is going to be BETTER than Photoshop and honestly, nothing for pay comes close either.

Free is good for starter "photo editors", but I'll never give up my PS, no matter what anyone else says.

I have photoshop. It's outrageously expensive when programs like this can do most things for free. Also, I use my printer's software to do all the printing.

The key being MOST, but nowhere near all. Uh... Your printer's software can't do soft proofing and such like PS can, sorry. If you took the time and actually learned how to use PS and all its features you would see why Professionals swear by it. Just owning software doesn't mean you know how to use it. I am a best bang for the buck person, so I tried all the free alternatives, I still have Paint.net as well as GIMP installed, but they just couldn't do what I needed... so Adobe is what I ended up with. Curves, Duotone, Soft Proofing, Smart Sharpening, Lens Blur, Vanishing Point, LAB, etc. Just to name a few tools that other programs do not have.

BTW, your printer's software won't do you any good when you are sending out for real photographic prints, books, magazines, etc. nor will any of the other editing softwares; But Adobe PS will!!

If all you are doing is editing for fun or home or hobby, then GIMP, Paint.Net, or another cheaper paid program would most likely work for you and be more then you need.. But for Professional usage or when your products end in print then Adobe PS is the only choice right now, if you want full control over everything.

I've used Photoshop daily - all day - for decades. I'm still learning new things and new techniques.

No other piece of software on the planet comes close to the flexibility and power of Photoshop. It's a well conceived set of tools that combine in virtually infinite ways.

It must be good: Look at the secondary market it supports!

Free is nice. Free may even be better than expensive, regardless of features, in some folks' opinions.

However, if you want absolutely the most functional, powerful, capable, flexible image preparation tool available, buy Photoshop and take the time to learn to use it well. Start with the inexpensive Elements version if you're not sure; most of the concepts and user interface are consistent with its big brother.
