| [Skype] new software release beta
I'm just a caveman, and don't understand this Skype stuff ... but evidently there's a new software release. Perhaps someone can read the review, and translate into English for me... »www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2062402,00.asp |

Owned by AOL now, right? |

Neat toy.... |

I'd be surprised if Skype had much of a following in this crowd. We all have voip anyway that doesn't tie us to a computer. The only time I've used it was setting it up for my wife to do skype to skype chatting with a friend of hers in Bosnia...no other uses for us and she could have done that with any IM client... |

| reply to RockyBB The VoIP crowd may not be very keen on Skype in part because (1) Skype is too easy; any fool can use it and (2) VoIP can be much more practical if you need a real "phone-like" experience and features like a real caller ID displayed at the other end. I use both, because I don't believe that either is the right answer to everything. Usually VoIP when at home, and Skype on the road when it is practical as an alternative to the much more expensive mobile phone. But I'll often use Skype at home along with Skype chat, for example, for convenience. Skype chat allows me to "ping" the people I want to talk to, to check whether they have time for a call, before actually bothering them with a call. The chat lets me do useful little things like copy and paste bits of text without having to read them aloud, or keep track of more than one conversation at at time. Also, Skype makes it trivial to set up a conference call with people around the world without having to worry about costs. |

We have kept our old POTS line, $25 a month. We also have Skype unlimited US calling, $15 a year. Good enough. |

| reply to RockyBB Skype is a neat toy, as stated above. The only reason I don't use them is the fact that they don't use SIP. It's all about Asterisk, and anything other than SIP or IAX doesn't cut it. |

| reply to Nate425 We don't use Skype as our phone service, but my wife works international and we have a number of friends in various countries. As a courtesy to them, I have Skype spliced into our cordless via a USB box.
Skype has a significant following outside the US as a pure IM, but its encryption and firewall bypassing is a double edged sword. It makes it easy to use in most places, but the enemy of many IT managers. |

| When I first started voip I used a USB to rj11 adaptor from www.cuphone.com - it works very well and can be used with any softphone not just skype (including google talk, msn etc). -- "So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." |

1 edit | I use the yealink device from skypmate.net. I actually have two devices -- a handset for my laptop and a USB box that goes to between my cordless phone and the wall. The device works well.
Yealink has driver's for many other VOIP services. The newer versions of Eyebeam also support these devices out of the box. I normally use that unit with my Asterisks connection. I also own a Nokia E61 which is connected to my Asterisks box which greatly reduces the need for a USB handset. |
