Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Its been doing pretty good the past few weeks, tonight I may as well have my PC hooked up to two cans and a string. Noticed CNN vids were REALLY laggy. Did a check and my DL speed to Chicago was a whopping 520. Only about 10x less then what it should be. Makes me wonder what I am paying for at this point.

From what I have read on here it seems pointless to call, I am gone all day at work, so it would be impossible to be here if the tech showed up.

Speeds went in the crapper in Waterloo tonight as well.

Not too hot for 10/1 service.

Its insane, network lag does NOT explain a almost 90% decrese in speed for about 5 hours a night. Gonna check mine now again and see, it was back to 4500 this morning which is about what i pay for (you of couse never GET what you pay for, but I would at least feel better if I was getting HALF of it)

The US or State Gov is really going to have to crack down on these HSI compaines that think they can claim all these high speeds and then hide up the "paying for UP TO (insert speed here)" loophole. They can say that and give you 56k for all they care, they are covered. Starting to make me wonder if Mason City could do a better job.

Reset your modem there has been a speed increase.

Wow thanks a lot MediaCom, good to know my 50 bucks or whatever a month for 5000/256 is being used well....how do they sleep at night?

Last Result:
Download Speed: 592 kbps (74 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 235 kbps (29.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Yep, thats about 11.8% of what I pay for. Yippe, wonder if I can get a refund.

RESET your Modem!!! You may not have the right config file.
Pull the plug on the modem and router if you have one wait 30 sec..
Plug modem in first let it sync up and then plug router in.

You should get a new config file and the NEW faster speeds!

Ok here is one for the "What the?!" section. I reset my modem and did a speed test to Chicago.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 443 kbps (55.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 470 kbps (58.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Good news! My upload speed is almost 500! BAD NEWS! My UL is faster then my download......whatever....

Did you wait a bit before you plugged it back in?

What type of modem do you have?

Get into your modem by typing this in Browser: »192.168.100.1

Post the signal levels please.

If this just started up for you its because Im sure of the speed increase. I noticed a huge drop today in speeds.
Reset modem twice and have the new speeds although they have dropped now but still faster than we were in the past.

I just reset everything again (I have vonage, guess that would be considered a router)

Last Result:
Download Speed: 650 kbps (81.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 469 kbps (58.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

DL is still total crap, but upload is about double what it should be (must be due to the increse). I can bet you money if I do this again around 8am it will be around 4700 download.....I will check my levels now.

Power Level = 3 dBmV

Upstream Value
Channel ID 4
Frequency 34000000 Hz Ranged

Power Level 43 dBmV

What type of Modem???

Try setting it up with just your modem to your pc....
And test speeds again.

Its pretty much the same issue I and a lot of people in this area have had for the past month or 2. Once 4Pm rolls around the download speeds just go south for the winter. Then about 10PM things will be fine, so its not my router.

I have a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem that I have had since 2001 (model SB 4200). I got Vonage at least a month before these issues started. I seem to be getting a bit of activity light flashing, now and then, but that seems to be normal. I dont have any viruses on my PC (checked that first)

Your snr could be a little higher... 30 is bad...but I would get yourself a new Motorola modem sb5120
Your's isn't docsis 2.0 compliant. Time to upgrade seriously.
I still would run your modem without the vonage to see.
You should have the new speed increase
Can you post your modem log too please.
I'm not sure but your modem may not be able to handle the speed increase. I had this happen to me with a usr6000 cable modem it couldn't do the 5000/256 speeds...
Buy a new one try it out... You should upgrade anyway...
Yours is only docsis 1.1 compliant.
Get it up to the 2.0 standards and you will see improvement.
When connected to a DOCSIS 2.0 cable network, capable of up to 30 Mbps upstream capacity*
I have the 4200 too for my business and although Mediacom says it should be ok I would still like a newer modem.

I really have my doubts a new modem will do anything, I rent this one from MediaCom. These issues started way before they upgraded the speed, and when I test OUTSIDE of the 4PM-10PM window the speed is fine. I dont even know if I can just go out and get my own modem.

It seems to support the UL speed fine, so part of it worked.

Turn that one in for a newer one or yes you can get your own and save $5 on your bill per month... Unless you have the phone service with Mediacom then you need their modem.

Seriously turn that one in & buy a new one they arent that expensive. Best Buy!

Its not the cash, its just that I have my doubts it will do anything. Its not like this thing is bad all the time. Youd think MC would be telling its customers to do this or atleast call us

Your modem should be able to handle the speed increase I'm sure... But there could be other factors.. Modems do go bad.

Have you had a tech out? Tried to call tech yet?
They may have you remove the vonage device too.
At leaset give them a call.
877-387-8087 for residential.
Ask them to check for noise etc. Have them ping you too.
Your neighbors having these issues as well?
