Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Its been doing pretty good the past few weeks, tonight I may as well have my PC hooked up to two cans and a string. Noticed CNN vids were REALLY laggy. Did a check and my DL speed to Chicago was a whopping 520. Only about 10x less then what it should be. Makes me wonder what I am paying for at this point.

From what I have read on here it seems pointless to call, I am gone all day at work, so it would be impossible to be here if the tech showed up.

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Speeds went in the crapper in Waterloo tonight as well.

Not too hot for 10/1 service.

Its insane, network lag does NOT explain a almost 90% decrese in speed for about 5 hours a night. Gonna check mine now again and see, it was back to 4500 this morning which is about what i pay for (you of couse never GET what you pay for, but I would at least feel better if I was getting HALF of it)

The US or State Gov is really going to have to crack down on these HSI compaines that think they can claim all these high speeds and then hide up the "paying for UP TO (insert speed here)" loophole. They can say that and give you 56k for all they care, they are covered. Starting to make me wonder if Mason City could do a better job.

Reset your modem there has been a speed increase.

Wow thanks a lot MediaCom, good to know my 50 bucks or whatever a month for 5000/256 is being used well....how do they sleep at night?

Last Result:
Download Speed: 592 kbps (74 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 235 kbps (29.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Yep, thats about 11.8% of what I pay for. Yippe, wonder if I can get a refund.

RESET your Modem!!! You may not have the right config file.
Pull the plug on the modem and router if you have one wait 30 sec..
Plug modem in first let it sync up and then plug router in.

You should get a new config file and the NEW faster speeds!

Ok here is one for the "What the?!" section. I reset my modem and did a speed test to Chicago.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 443 kbps (55.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 470 kbps (58.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Good news! My upload speed is almost 500! BAD NEWS! My UL is faster then my download......whatever....

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Did you wait a bit before you plugged it back in?

What type of modem do you have?

Get into your modem by typing this in Browser: »192.168.100.1

Post the signal levels please.

If this just started up for you its because Im sure of the speed increase. I noticed a huge drop today in speeds.
Reset modem twice and have the new speeds although they have dropped now but still faster than we were in the past.

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

I just reset everything again (I have vonage, guess that would be considered a router)

Last Result:
Download Speed: 650 kbps (81.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 469 kbps (58.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

DL is still total crap, but upload is about double what it should be (must be due to the increse). I can bet you money if I do this again around 8am it will be around 4700 download.....I will check my levels now.

What type of Modem???

Try setting it up with just your modem to your pc....
And test speeds again.

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Your snr could be a little higher... 30 is bad...but I would get yourself a new Motorola modem sb5120
Your's isn't docsis 2.0 compliant. Time to upgrade seriously.
I still would run your modem without the vonage to see.
You should have the new speed increase
Can you post your modem log too please.
I'm not sure but your modem may not be able to handle the speed increase. I had this happen to me with a usr6000 cable modem it couldn't do the 5000/256 speeds...
Buy a new one try it out... You should upgrade anyway...
Yours is only docsis 1.1 compliant.
Get it up to the 2.0 standards and you will see improvement.
When connected to a DOCSIS 2.0 cable network, capable of up to 30 Mbps upstream capacity*
I have the 4200 too for my business and although Mediacom says it should be ok I would still like a newer modem.

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Yes I was...
Mediacom isn't 2.0 compliant themselves Jason.
But if you compare these two modems you have better performance with the SB5120.

I have done testing with each modem.
Plus the specs prove it ok?
Is that enough for you or would you like to see the specs.

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

I'm not debating the fact that a newer modem will give you better performance. I was simply stating that Mediacom still issues the SB4200 and it is a good modem. And if you want to talk about specs for modems then CABLElabs specs for docsis 1.0 is 38Mbps down and 10Mbps up far above mediacoms current cap.

That may be true on some modems but not all.
For example the usr6000 will not perform at those speeds and is docsis 1.0 compliant.
It depends on the modem...

Its pretty much the same issue I and a lot of people in this area have had for the past month or 2. Once 4Pm rolls around the download speeds just go south for the winter. Then about 10PM things will be fine, so its not my router.

I have a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem that I have had since 2001 (model SB 4200). I got Vonage at least a month before these issues started. I seem to be getting a bit of activity light flashing, now and then, but that seems to be normal. I dont have any viruses on my PC (checked that first)

I really have my doubts a new modem will do anything, I rent this one from MediaCom. These issues started way before they upgraded the speed, and when I test OUTSIDE of the 4PM-10PM window the speed is fine. I dont even know if I can just go out and get my own modem.

It seems to support the UL speed fine, so part of it worked.

Turn that one in for a newer one or yes you can get your own and save $5 on your bill per month... Unless you have the phone service with Mediacom then you need their modem.

Seriously turn that one in & buy a new one they arent that expensive. Best Buy!

Its not the cash, its just that I have my doubts it will do anything. Its not like this thing is bad all the time. Youd think MC would be telling its customers to do this or atleast call us

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Your modem should be able to handle the speed increase I'm sure... But there could be other factors.. Modems do go bad.

Have you had a tech out? Tried to call tech yet?
They may have you remove the vonage device too.
At leaset give them a call.
877-387-8087 for residential.
Ask them to check for noise etc. Have them ping you too.
Your neighbors having these issues as well?

Hey IronDragon!!
Yeah the 4200 should be ok... I have it for the biz and its fine.
Mediacom hasn't gone to the 2.0 docsis yet but I do game and found the sb5120 to have better performance.

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

Why is it so hard for some people to accept that Mediacom oversells their bandwidth? I don't understand it.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 797 kbps (99.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 525 kbps (65.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

The speeds blows because it's 7pm, right in the middle of prime-time. I'll bet you $100 that if I run a test at 1am, I'll get at least 5mb+.

Just did a hard reset to humor you and myself for that matter. I'm in Clear Lake, but I'm fairly sure we use the same equip as Mason, correct me if I'm wrong?

Here's my signal levels, which are usually just fine, so I doubt that's the problem either...

Downstream Power -8.4 dBmV

Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City

John I would have someone come out.
I see your down Stream power is a bit high and I would think they could tweak that. the closer to 0 the better.
But they will tell you that -15 - +15 is he acceptable range.
Your snr is a bit low too. 30 or above is ok...
Have you called tech for some assistance in checking noise levels etc?
I would.
If you have a router take it out and try running the modem with out it for a bit too. Ive had a router go bad.

Well I pretty much just wasted 80 bucks on a new modem from BB, got the SB5120, but of course I get the screen where it wants my account number and registration number, I got the account number but no reg number, could not hook it up anyway. Vonage is not the issue, sometimes the thing works fine.

It sounds like a LOT of people in the area have the same issue I do (crappy crappy speed after 4PM). It would be nice to get the new modem going but without my reg number I cant do it. I cant find the paperwork they gave me back in 2001, it was ATT @Home then so I don't even think it would have a reg number.

really, cool your a life saver. At least I can use this new modem then The one I have is over 5 years old and could be a little worse for wear (heck when i first got cable here in mason the speed was 1500/128 and that was considered fast at the time)

Well I did a Chicago speed test with the new modem and things are pretty much the same....craptastic. UL is around 500-600 (thats on a line that I guess is now supposed to be 8000....whatever) and upload is around 460-470, so at least that is better. So clearly the issue is not on this end, espically with all the people around the area having the same issue. I will raise the $100 bucks and say that not only do I bet most of those people DONT have Vonage, they probably have Mediacom phone and are still getting screwed over. Getting old thats for sure.

Well we are going down again, just like clockwork. In the past hour my Chicago download speed has dropped from over 7k down to under 3k. Looks like this will be the way of things from now on.

Well I have bonefied proof that 4the issues in Mason City know how to tell time. Here are two tests to Chicago i did, one at about 355PM and the other at about 409PM

here is the 3:55PM data

Last Result:
Download Speed: 7404 kbps (925.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 474 kbps (59.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Here is the 409PM Chitown speed test

Last Result:
Download Speed: 5289 kbps (661.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 478 kbps (59.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

about 20 mins and I have lost about 2Mbps. God

Mediacom had better get there act together, otherwise Mason City will give them the heave ho.

Here is my 423PM Chicago test.

Download Speed: 1583 kbps (197.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 476 kbps (59.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

In a word...Craptastic.

In 30mins my connection has lost around 6Mbps. that is just inSANE. This is more then people coming home from work, sounds like crappy equipment.

you're definitely not alone zoomer, I can barely play BF2 anymore...I think I was better off with Qwest 1.5/896! This is sad really. If it doesn't get better fast, I'm cancelling everything and going back to satellite/dsl/qwest phone. I was giving mediacom a second chance by switching everything to them and they are blowing it...HARD.

I dont get drop-outs or anything, I seem to just get REALLY bad speed this time of day.
Right now my DL speed is about the same as my Upload to chicago, very slow.

If anything its getting worse and worse and clearly MediaCom does not feel they need to address it. I guess the line "you can expect to lose 95% of the speed your paying for from 4PM-11PM" must be in the TOS someplace.
