| reply to Zoomer30 Re: Well, Mediacom HSI is back to crap in Mason City
The term "customer service" does not exist in the cable industry. Try as they might to change that perception, stuff like this just shows they still suck at it.
I have never in all my days seen speeds as bad as some of the ones posted on here tonight. I mean DOWNLOAD SPEEDS that are HALF as fast as the UPLOAD SPEED? First off....how can they maintain the UL at that level but not the DL I know there is a lot more DLing then ULing.
I tell you they need to ban porn over the net, our speeds would go up 10,000%
I was watching NASA TV this afternoon (just about the time the shuttle docked with the station) and even though my speeds were crap I was still getting a nice 150 KB/s video stream from NASA. Not bad.
I will add my 2 cents about them not fixing anything. Fixing stuff = money = loss in profits.
They should have never came out with MAX and never been raising the speed if they cant even maintain a tenth of the speed.
Its like going to a car lot, ordering a car, and then they deliver it and all you get is a couple wheels and a hood. You say "whats this?!" and they say "Oh we don't GARUNTEE you will get a whole car" They would get sued for that, and if MediaCom does not get its crap together they will either be sued or be out of business (ticked off customers have a way of telling other people how much you suck!) |

| reply to john_895 they will call you back, and I'm sure some of the techs check this forum. I had a similar issue when I lived in Iowa City. Took awhile to get it fixed, but I would never resort to DSL. They are a growing company, pretty new to VOIP, just takes time if you have it. You sound persistent which is good. E-mail those speed tests every week! Get to know those tier 1 reps by their name jk.. remember that they do want what you want, but there is only so much that can be done at that level. From my experience this takes time! It's not like they don't know If you have had a tech call and tell you that there is nothing they can do about it then most likely it has been escalated to the NOC(Network Operations Center)and it's just a matter of time. Time frame, you may never know, sorry, a bad deal but that's how it is. Keep up the good work and post those peak time speeds when you get them |

| Decent for me too in Clear Lake at the moment, 9000kbps down - still not 15000 I'm suppose to be getting now, but I'd be more than happy with that speed...
...If it was there when I was able to use it. When I get home at 5 I'm sure it'll be back to the normal 200kbps down. Mediacom never did call me back either. Get on the phones people! |

| reply to Zoomer30 Mine is good right now, its almost biblical how fast it goes down the crapper once 430-5PM rolls around. HEre is my current Chicago speed:
Last Result: Download Speed: 6109 kbps (763.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 475 kbps (59.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Not bad, but I know it wont last.
the really odd thing is even when my connection is crappy I never get dropped from games, seems really odd. Must be a very clean yet slow connection. |

| Most users weren't even aware of the upgrade of speeds. And my issue has been going on for over 5 weeks now - before they "upgraded" everyone.
They were having problems before this upgrade. The upgrade without having the necessary infrastructure in place just made things more noticeable for those who weren't having issues, and made it worse for those of us who were. |

505PM speed test, Chi-town
Download Speed: 553 kbps (69.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 396 kbps (49.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Hope you dont need any big files, gonna take all day on that pos.
Here was my 350PM test:
Download Speed: 6109 kbps (763.6 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 475 kbps (59.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
So I lost about 700 KB/s or about a 91%(!) decreas in speed. Yikes, how does Mediacom stay in business. |

| reply to Zoomer30 Is it just mean or does over 90% of the HSI traffic in Iowa get put through the mchsi node during prime time, talk about not thinking
It seems like that though, a lot of the tracert data I have seen on here seems to have a "mchsi" node around the 3-6 jump area and its usually pinging higher then the rest. |

I am getting really tired of this poor service from them just like you. I wish you, I, and everyone else good luck in this problem with Mediacom. |

| reply to Zoomer30 Its not a node...its a router...and 100% of mediacom internet traffic goes thru mediacom's routers...I guess i'm missing your problem here
A node is out in the plant and turns RF into Light (and vice-versa) for the fiber optic connection to the headend |

Wouldn't common sense dictate that if you are on a Mediacom connection, you would use their network for traffic, it's the basis of an ISP. If you were using AOL, your traffic would go through AOL's network. So what is there to think about? |

Thank you to Dr Slash for finding this old article for me: »cable-dsl.home.att.net/#Asymmetry
Definitely worth a read right now. This used to be a huge problem back in the days of uncapped @Home in Iowa City (with nodes of 1400 households and 30% penetration rates).
I strongly suspect that the problems we are seeing are a symptom of the TCP/IP asymmetry flaw kicking in as areas with a high number of users on segments are saturating the upstream now that speeds are high enough to do it. There could be no one DLing and your download would still get slashed like this.

| In fact, I believe you are right, marigolds.
I spoke to a Tech who shall remain nameless from this area this morning, he informed me that the 512K upload "upgrade" for standard HSI users is being rolled back indefinitely. He also said Mediacom was pondering offering 2Mbps up for MAX users but decided against it. He said in his recent discussions with a NOC operator that the nodes can only handle a total of about 10Mbit upstream and with all the regular users going to 512K it was just overloading the grid.
MAX users will not see a decrease in upstream, fortunately. |
