[northeast] actiontec MI424WR NAT Error: connection pool is full

Actiontec MI424WR router (provided free verizon FIOS install 2 mos old)

I have noticed that with utorrent(also w/ Azureus, etc), this router has some arbitrary and low NAT table entry limit.

I get errors in the Security Log that say:

NAT Error : connection pool is full. No connection created

The link at »https://www.jungo.com/openrg/doc/4.4/use···102.html

For the router says

"NAT Error : Connection pool is full - a message notifying that a connection has not been created because the connection pool is full. "

This is with a relatively low global connection limit within utorrent of about 250. I've seen problems around 125 too.

When you have many simultaneous connections, like seeding and downloading multiple torrents, regular web browsing is nearly impossible. Not sure if their timeouts are too long, or if they aren't dedicating enough memory to their NAT table, but exiting utorrent (and the subsequent close of connections) is enough to fix the problem.

No problems with other dlink routers and netgear routers in exactly the same configuration.

The machine isn't the problem, running utorrent on one machine, browsing from another yields the same problems and same errors.

Failed attempts to browse a website generate those NAT errors within the security log showing either DNS server as the destination -- or if the DNS request gets through, just a simple failure to establish any outbound TCP connections to web servers, etc.

To its benefit, the router is very clear in displaying exactly what the error is, and why the new connection isn't going through.

I've checked every option under every menu, and I don't see a way of increasing the number of supported connections, or decreasing the timeout values(if this would help get rid of older recently-closed entries faster). There *IS* a configuration file that you can manually edit, and I saw a promising entry here or there, but without proper documentation (jungo.com doesnt cover this AFAICT) I'm hesitant to play.

My fix is to buy a new router --- the KWRG614 looks awesome, open source and everything. My current routers only have 10mbps WAN ports, and with the 15/2 service, just aren't fast enough!@#

Re: [northeast] actiontec MI424WR NAT Error: connection pool is

sounds like the NAT table is 1k in size. there is no way other then if you had access to the source code to increase the NAT table. your best bet is to go with a router that has a larger NAT table. i use a cisco 2800 series router and have never had a problem what so ever.

I have the same router and I'm seeding 5 torrends in Azureus but I do not see the problem you are describing.

What version of router firmware are you running?

I upgraded mine to 4.0.16.1.45.120 right after getting it.

I seem to remember reading something abour NAT errors with an older version of firmware in a forum somewhere.

Hope this helps.

I'm the OP.

A 2800 would be nice. But the cheapest 2800 is the 2801 at about $1200 new. EBAY could probably yield a cheaper price, but still...

I'm running the 45.120 code too. I upgraded after first seeing this problem.

I was seeding probably 15 torrents and downloading 5.

I did a couple speed tests, and they were coming back as a paltry 5mps(I've got 15/2), I noticed my nic card was fixed at 100FULL. The actiontec is 10/100 auto, but it should have properly autosensed the 100 speed, and autonegotiated the full duplex. (Note there's a difference) I switched my card to auto, and the speed tests came back 15mbps.

While a duplex mismatch can definitely cause problems (normally manifests itself as speed issues), I fail to see how it could affect the number of new outbound connections created, unless the older ones were failing often as a result of the problem. I don't think that was happening, at least at any decent rate.

Also, sailing_nut: I think I've upped the number of global connections, or at least utorrent did when I changed my link speed settings. The default might be low enough not to cause problems. With high bandwidth down, I think a higher number of connections can really help the overall speed you can obtain. Especially when the peers have low upload caps.

What's your global number of connections set to?

Thanks

I think Azerus is using UPNP by default and this will create a lot of entries in your NAT table. if you don't close properly your client then those will be left in table and have to be deleted manually on old versions of firmware.

For Sailing_nut, I am running .120 firmware, and still have the same problem. Try running two P2P or BT apps at the same time, or download more than 5 files.

Additionally I've noticed that Port Forwarding doesn't (a) expire old UPNP entries, and (b) adds several UPNP entries that already exist.

For example, my router currently has over 200 entries for "Azureus UPnP 21618 TCP - TCP Any -> 21618" and "Azureus UPnP 21618 UDP - UDP Any -> 21618" -- all the same.

Time to replace the router methinks. This one just doesn't cut the mustard. I've got WAY too many devices to make FIOS work now... MoCA, a better router, etc... ack.

In the UPnP settings on the Actiontec, did you enable the option so it cleans up old UPnP entries? The manual seemed to note you could hit problems if you didn't and you used apps that created a lot of UPnP entries. Or are you saying you've done this and it just doesn't clear them out fast enough, in which case a new router may very well be the best option?

I found the entry that you are refering to, in Advanced > Universal Plug and Play. However, the entry listed as "Enable Automatic Cleanup of Old Unused UPnP Services" is checked. Either it doesn't work, or it takes longer than I'd like.

Maybe rebooting the router would clean them out, but it doesn't seem to clean them at all... I have several entries in there that simply haven't gone away in weeks/months.

I think a new router is probably best; the MI424WR doesn't seem to be capable of handling the kind of higher level usage that a power user such as myself would like.

If you have a spare/old pc slap a few nic's in it and setup ipcop.

No problems whatsoever.

Rebooting the router does NOT clean them out. Annoying.

How do I clean this stuff out of my router's port forward page? Can I keep it in there? There is too many to try to delete them all.

I found an "easier" way of deleting all the utorrent entries that UPnP created.

In the actiontec router settings page, go to advanced > configuration file.

Once the file is open ctrl + f and search for utorrent. Youll find a bunch of entries. If your not worried about clearing out entries you may need, clear out all the numbered utorrent entries starting with the number, example:

(7
(services
(0
(name(utorrent))
(trigger
(0
(protocol(6))
(dst
(start(40001))
(end(40001))
)
(fwd
(start(40001))
(end(40001))
)
)
)
)
)
(rdir
(item
(0
(hostname(192.168.1.3))
)
)
)
(rule_owner(2))
(enabled(1))
(mac(08:00:46:c1:4e:d6))
)

Do this only if you feel comfortable editing your config file. Make sure you save the old config file into a text file on your desktop before you make any changes.
