Don't *Ever* Argue Again About The Pronunciation Of Linux

A while back I did a whole thing about the pronunciation of Linux. I was right then, but here's the absolute proof that people have been waiting for. All debates stop here:

Except that if you read his link, you'd see it's from 2005.

Besides, we've had this debate frequently and I agree with Daniel See Profile: Don't *Ever* Argue Again About The Pronunciation Of Linux

There is no 'correct' way to pronounce anything. A group of language speakers can decide to adopt a pronunciation, and that's how the word is pronounced.

If you disagree with this position, then please stop saying 'tom-ay-toe' and pronounce it correctly as 'tom-ah-toe'.

Yeah, but is it ketchup or catsup--that's the real question.

That may be true, but I can't stand the Linux pronunciation "line-ucks".

I remembered it driving me nuts when people called it 'Lee-nucks'... Same problem, different take.

So I solved it... I switch to BSD. Can't really screw that pronunciation up.

Dave, you are usually correct on this point, but it's completely different when someone is known to have officially created a word. At that point, their opinion of how it should be pronounced and/or used is legitimately authoritative.

it still makes me cringe anytime someone pronounces linux as 'Lye-nix' instead of the proper pronounciation.

Is Linux in the Merriam-Webster webpage? If it is, there should be also the pronunciation.

Just a though...

Well...Microsoft still has to work on the proper pronuncuation of Windows...many around here say that it is 'Win-Blows' while other say it is 'Win-Dooze' (dooze, as in, falling asleep) Our one IT tech says that it is 'Windows' as in a window in your house or car, but he's outnumbered 99 to 1.

That would be Doze, not dooze. And windows as in a window in a house or car? Um, that's exactly how it's pronounced......

Edit: So looks like the other 99 don't know what they are talking about
