Also noted that the volume level on the TV used to be around 20 on previous services with Dish and Comcast, with FIOS the volume level is around 15. You can adjust the volume in the Motorola box by going into the Settings menu and selecting Audio. The default seems to be Heavy compression and Surround sound. I have changed mine to Medium compression and Stereo. I think Heavy compression is too much and causes audible clipping. The lowest level compression should be best but I find is a bit too low. I would prefer no compression but the options are too crude in their adjustment. It's not clear what is happening with the stereo/surround option. I assume the surround is just a synthesized surround from two channel type effect. There also is an internal audio/mute control on the Motorola box that I happend upon when programming my remote. I don't know how to get to it normally.

| reply to foundation00 How is the FIOS DVR? I am on DirecTV and have the HD Tivo. I like the interface a lot. The only problem is that I don't get the local channels in HD. My OTA reception sucks.
So I'm considering switching to FIOS TV. I have FIOS internet, which I love, but I've here some pretty bad things about the DVR. Can anyone here compare it to a Tivo?
Thanks. |

| I have the comcast DVR which is similar to the Verizon DVR. From Tivo users say, the Comcast DVR has far fewer features than Tivo. Having never had Tivo, however, I can't really compare. All I can say is that the comcast DVR works fine for me. It records the shows I ask it to and I can easily find them and play them back. I think the chief disadvantage of the comcast DVR is that it is difficult, but not impossible to archive favorite recordings onto a PC. It can be done but from my understanding, this is pretty easy to do with Tivo.
On the other hand, with comcast and verizon, you don't have to buy an expensive piece of hardware, the monthly lease fee is less than the Tivo subscription fee, and you get the local channels in HD. On top of that, my understanding is that DirecTV compresses the HD signal alot so its quality is inferior. For the HD you do get, Verizon will probably offer you much better quality. My undertanding is that sat TV quality also suffers during times of heavy precipitation. You won't have that problem with Verizon.
I plan to switch to FIOS TV as soon as it is offered in my neighborhood (hopefully around the first of the year). On balance given what you gain, and what you lose, I would switch too. |

| reply to davechen I got the FIOS DVR with my installation last week. So far, it works great. The interface on the remote is straightforward and works well with the on-screen program guide. (The program guide could use a few tweaks, but that's another story.) I've used the guide to schedule overnight recording of several programs. I have also successfully recorded two programs simultaneously while watching a third, previously-recorded program.
Up to now I've recorded only SD programs (mostly movies) and they look fine on my 42" HD plasma set. Last night I recorded an HD program, so tonight I'll see how that came out.
I'm not familiar with Tivo equipment--they may have more bells and whistles.
BTW the remote that Verizon provided is not the one currently shown on the FIOS website. The new remote appears to have all the same functions, but the buttons have a different layout. The installers provide a manufacturer's instruction sheet which does not explain all the buttons. |

How is on-demand? In another thread, it sounds like it could replace TiVo. What content is available? |

| Those of us connected to the Bradley Blvd CO (intersection of Bradley and 7 Locks) will have to wait for our FIOS TV. My contact says March or April is the best guess. If anybody has any different information, please let us know what number you called. Thanks. |

| Not sure what map you are looking at but Olney looks to be in the initial service area. Olney is further north then that green area labeled Norbeck.
I spoke to a FiOS rep at a kiosk in Columbia Mall last week. She told me areas that already have FiOS internet would be able to have TV service starting in January. |

| I posted a map and some details ~ 2 years ago of Verizon's initial deployment by wirecenter (aka "CO"). The "initial service area" for television deployment is identical to Verizon's initial deployment for FiOS internet.
Here's a link, in case it's easier for anyone to look it up by wirecenter or VZ-wired-phone extension:

| reply to HDMontgomery Anyone with FIOSTV can you answer this question for me please?
With comcast (WHICH I HATE) I only have one STB. All my other TVs are just connected direct through coax (cable ready). I get most of the channels I want like that. Can I do the same with FIOS? I called the MD # and they say I only get channels 2-50 which does not include ANY cable channels like ESPN or the such. If this is the case the added cost of STBs may not make sense for me as much as I HATE COMCAST!
You'd think you could at least get channels 2-99 like with other cable. Am I wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks |
