Re: Work folder

I run Windows and Linux command line clients, but have never tried to have both doing the same work.
I can think of a few ways to try it, but have no idea if it would work, and judging by one of the replies here I doubt it would.

Thank liebold. I didn't realize the work the put out is different. I checked my windows work folder and there was no executables, but I guess that has to do with the current work it's doing.
My shared drive, that I was planning on putting work in, is a FAT32 drive.
I've got finals next week so I might not get around to trying to run the Windows command-line program in Wine too soon, but it's definitely something I'm interested in trying to do.

I have a couple of dual boot machines, and have been unable to figure out how to accomplish that end, also. I have to boot into Windows to pick up my WU and get it running.

Will be interested to see if one of the Linux gurus has a solution...

Edit: Speaking of Linux gurus... leibold See Profile posted while I was typing, so obviously, it can be done...

While it is possible to share folders between Linux and Windows on a dualboot system in general, there are two reasons this will not work with Folding@Home:

    • The files in the F@H work directory are not only datafiles, but also executable programs. These executable programs (folding cores) are operating system specific which means that the windows .exe will not work on linux and vice versa.
    • It gets even worse, because even the workunit data can be different. The assignment servers do know the operating system of the client and will only send workunits suitable for it. A current example are Gromacs 3.3 workunits that will only be send to linux clients since there is no windows core for those yet.

As always with computers, nothing is truly impossible if you are willing to put enough effort into it. If you are absolutely sure you want to be able to process the same workunits while running Windows and Linux than your only option is to use the Windows F@H commandline client in both operating systems. It will run normally in the Windows environment and it can be run using Wine (a kind of Windows emulation) in Linux. I have never done that (I'm running the native Linux client on my machines), but if you want to pursue this idea make sure that you create a small partition with FAT filesystem for the F@H work directory. FAT is the best option for a cross-platform read-write shared folder.

Based on some of the reading I have done and their warnings about directory structure during installs, I am going to venture that this is not possible.

I asked a friend of mine who knows a lot of Windows, *nix, etc and he recommended you ask at the folding community forum because he didn't know either.

I dual-boot between Windows and Linux. I have F@H installed on both. Because I may boot into one and not the other for days, I would like the work they do be shared so no matter what I boot into they pick up where the other left off. On Windows I have it installed in c:\program files\F@H\. On Linux it's wherever synaptic put it. I have an E drive that I use to share data between the two. I'd like both to work out of a folder such as e:\F@H\ (/media/e/F@H/) I looked through the documentation and config files and couldn't find any way to define this. Is there a way or is it a lost cause?
