Re: Funniest Install

said by Beebe See Profile :

So I got there and my telescoping ladder was 12.5' tall.

Sorry to get off subject..... I seen these telescoping ladders at home depot for $190 or so. They looked handy and not as bulky as ext ladder. I thought I better not start climbing racks in Home Depot to give it a test drive. After having flash backs of my last episode using the H.D. emp ladder to get something down up high a few weeks earlier. The home depot emp informed me I was not qualified to use the ladder... "OK ... I understand" Does any one else use these telescoping ladders? I guess if anyone has some feedback on them would be great and could save me from getting yelled at in the Orange store doing a test drive. I just did not want to spend $200 on a ladder I use once.

Thanks

Re: Funniest Install

We have a work van and truck we use that we carry an assortment of ladders on. Often we take the boss's Outback because it's a heck of a lot cheaper on gas. He has one of the gorilla ladders in it that can stretch out to about 20 feet. This works great at almost every customer we have (we don't do residential wireless) except a few but most of the ones with roofs over 20 feet have roof hatches.

Re: Funniest Install

Everyone who sees the ladder comments on it and wants to keep it. It's really handy and it'll get me on 95% of roofs around here. Most houses are single storey. Collapses to around 3' long. Handy for carrying inside the house too if needed to get into the attic.

It's the only ladder I carry around with me unless there's a special need for a longer one.

Beebe:

Is that one of the Little Giant ladders?

How heavy is your ladder? Is that the one that extends 12.5 feet?

I might want to get one.

Re: Funniest Install

It's not a little giant. Not sure what brand it is but I've seen several similar ones. A friend gave it to me because he got a new one. It's made of aluminum, pretty light and easy to carry under on arm. Not at all bulky. It looks very simlar to this one:

Re: Funniest Install

Adding to the "Funniest Install" thread, I was once climbing this same ladder to get on a roof, and my phone rang. It was actually the guy who gave me the ladder. So I answered the phone and continued on up the ladder. It was extended up to full height, and It only just reached the roof of this particular house. I was just about to climb off it onto the roof and one of the sections collapsed. This made the ladder lower than the height of the roof, so it started to fall over. One of my legs went through a rung on the ladder and the other leg didn't. I didn't sacrifice my balls fortunately, I just bruised the back of my leg slightly. Anyway, there was a porch there, so there was no wall for the ladder to fall against, it just fell over. I found myself sitting on the ground after a 12' fall and still talking on the phone to the guy as if nothing had happened. I told him I'd just fallen off a ladder, but he didn't take much notice and just kept talking.

Another time my grandfather was on a ladder. He was like 72 at the time. the ladder was leaning against a 4x4 post, and he was leaning out to one side. The ladder slipped off the post and he started to go down. I was fairly close by and I jumped to try and take some of the shock of him landing, but got there too late and basically fell on top of him. Anyway he said he didn't want me telling anyone he fell of that ladder. He said "I rode that thing all the way to the ground".

Re: Funniest Install

Is the collapsing of a section or two of the ladder a safety problem with that ladder? That might worry me.

Other then that, the ladder looks pretty neat.

I've done about 200 installs and can't think of one funny story. No nekid chicks, nothin.

Had some painful moments with a ladder. Smashed my finger nail clear off at 75 feet with a hammer(darn U bolt would not give me the yagi back). Got stuck under a house AC system for about 20 minutes(at least thats how long it took to wiggle my way free).Favorite one, Got bit pretty bad by a dog and then yelled at by it's owner because I obviously must have upset that dog! I guess that one could classify as funny.

Well those are the ones I remember. I guess there was nothing special about the rest.

OK, not sure if this qualifies as funny or just a little on the gross side....

One of my subs has about 5 dogs that live inside. When I got there for the installation, there was no nasty smell or anything, but you could tell that the dogs lived inside. When I went to hook up her PC, I knelt down near her desk. Suddenly my right knee was cold and wet! It took my brain about 1 second to realize I had just knelt in dog pee! I tried to block out the fact that I now was wearing pants that had been pee'd in and it wasn't even my pee! Of course, I wasn't able to return home for a couple of hours. But when I did get home, my suspiscions were confirmed as soon as my 2 dogs got near. They immediately started sniffing my knees and would not go away. I was in the shower about 5 seconds later.....

Now for the ladder subject.... This ladder is awesome. It is a little pricy, but the wide base makes it more stable than any ladder I have ever been on. It has a 300lb rating (I'm about 210, so carrying anything with me probably would cause me to exceed the rating on the 225lb ladders). The only drawback is that is a little heavy (I don't see the weight listed in the specs, but probably 50lbs or so).

Now back to our regularly scheduled funny installations...

Re: Funniest Install

The one I have is similar to this, but it only goes to 17'. I got it from Costco for $100. We use it for most of our installs.
