Uninstalling OS completely...

Hi guyz its being a long time i have post or reply to a topic.

Anyway was busy with my life until i got onto this problem which left me with no place but to go here and ask help from the experts.

Ok, story starts here...bear with me...

My com previously have 1 harddrive, with a Windows XP SP2 OS. Yesterday I got 1 old harddrive from my cousin which he do not want. I install the harddrive to my computer, and went to format the harddrive using Windows XP cd as it was being partitioned, but I accidentally chooses to install the same Windows XP SP2 on that hard drive.

Realising that I have to choose the same OS everytime I start the computer, I went to use the Windows XP cd and boot it and format the whole drive again, this time without installing the OS. But that did not solve the problem.

Now whenever I start to boot the PC it will ask me which Windows XP SP2 will I want to choose. 1 of the options will lead to a "Windows file is missing or corrupted"(something like that). Also, the file name {windows directory}/system32/hal.dll. I guess that this is the OS which I have uninstalled from the drive.

Just wanted to ask how can i completely uninstalled the OS so that the screen which let me choose the OS will not appear? Thanks!

Re: Uninstalling OS completely...

Try;

1. Reinstalled the win xp, make sure you install it on the first hdd. Or;

2. Go to system properties, click on Advanced tab's, then click on Setting for Startup and recovery. Make sure your OS (wxp) are configured on first root partition like this

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
Cheers

Hi,

WOW! Thanks!

The 2nd method works beautifully~.
Was glad that the people here help me to solve it.

Anyway, was asking, how do i set permission for someone to share my network folder? I can't access my computer from my other computer as it say that the computer do not have permission to access...does anyone know where can I set it?

Thanks again!

Glad its help.

If you're asking about the simple folder sharing; just right click on the folder we want to share and choose "Share this folder on the network". The other option; "Allow network users to change my files" are giving permission to all users to change (read/write/execute) all the files inside.

Make sure your windows firewall or any 3rd party firewall softwares are giving access to folder/files/printing sharing, or port tcp=139,445; udp=137,138.

Then, for setting up a certain users can accessing the shared folders; eg; User1 only can read and execute but not write/delete. and User2 can do all tasks. First make sure you unchecked "Use Simple File Sharing" inside >> Open up any folder; for eg My Computer, >> Go to "Tools" >> "Folder Options" >> "View" >> Unchecked the last options "Use Simple File Sharing".

Then, go sharing your folder like before. But this time, you can set up any users you want it to be with permission for read/write/execute, but you need to setup a local account for the current users to access with. To make a new user; advance method; is by accessing Administrative tools inside control panel, go to Computer management; click user tabs, and create any users you want.

Cheers

Update:

I use simple file sharing, with the option to allow the users to change my files, and the same problem persist, telling me that I do not have the permission to access the computer.

As for the option to uncheck the Use Simple File Sharing, I cannot find it, meaning its not on the list, the same goes for the administrative tools to create users.

I think those features you mention is Windows XP pro. Mine is Windows XP home, which I think do not have the features.

As for the windows firewall access I haven't tried yet, but i will try for the weekend and see how it turns out and update you again. Being busy for the weekend as I just bought a new(sort of) graphic card(7600GT AGP) for my computer . Being trying out the games to see how well it looks like .

Anyway will update you guyz again, thanks!

Yea, available in Win XP Pro. But in WXP HE, it should be much simpler, just right click on the folder, and choose Sharing & Security... that's all, and don't forget to disable the guest account.

You can check the windows firewall and other firewall you use, some antivirus come with builtin firewall like Norton, Bit Defender, Mcafee and so on. Make sure you release the ports for sharing (or you can turn them off to check on the effects, and turn them on again).

uhuh OT: what is the price for your new GC?? me too still using agp.

Oh ok, I will take a look at it. Anyway will update you again when I have tried the method, which is the weekend or next week weekday as I will only touch my computer during the weekend.

I think I should not be the antivirus. Right now I use kaspersky antivirus, this problem already existed before when I uses kaspersky. Anyway, my computers windows SP2 is upgraded from SP1, as my XP installation Disc is only SP1, so will this be the problem? Anyway I will try to check the firewalls of windows and antivirus to see if they are blocking.

As for my graphic card, I bought it in Singapore, FUNAN IT mall, cost me SGD268, which is around RM620. Looks like a good deal to me .

Update:

I tried to unblock the ports in windows firewall, but it says that some other program is in use for those ports, here are the programs that is using all my ports:

tcp 139 = NetBIOS Session Service
tcp 445 = SMB over TCP
udp 137 = NetBIOS Name Service
udp 138 = NetBIOS Datagram Service

Just wondering, are these services doing the networking stuffs?

Thanks!
