1 edit | Single Radio Repeater w/Mikrotik
I know it's not the best idea in the world, but I'm a little stuck for options because of the weather.
I have an RB532a and an RB112. I have configured the RB532a to act as an 802.11b/g Master AP and Virtual AP. The RB112 is configured as a client for the Virtual AP. The Virtual AP routes traffic from the Master AP to the RB112 which is connected to the Internet. The RB112 is setup to do NAT.
I have this configured and working, but before I deploy are there any caveats I should know about. I am using a WLM54g in the Master AP.
I have LOTS of Prism based clients on this site. Are there any client incompatabilties I should be wary of? |

We gave up trying to use RB112's as CPE's....not enough juice for Ubiquiti SR2's. |

Really? how could you tell it ran out of power? I have never used the sr2 with a rb112 but have used the rb512
What board do you recommend for the sr2 *that will run ros)
Thanks |

2 edits | reply to mrbueno BS! The RB112 works fine with SR2 cards, all we use is SR2s, SR5s, SR9s and some times CM9s. I have been using one SR2 and one SR5 in one RB112 for a good time now. I didn't have any rb532s so I had to use RB112s. I don't like to use the rb112, but not for any reason other then the low CPU power. I prefer to use the RB532s because it can handle nstreme and hotspot a lot better and then that could be better too. I think the RB112 is fine for a CPE but not an AP. A friend of mine runs a wisp in Kentucky and he sets up the customers with one SR2 for the tower connection and then one of the CM9 cards for the customers wireless network.
As for the problem with the Virtual AP I can't really say anything because I only played around with it for a month or two. I was toying with the idea of having the VAP as a hotspot . I found that to many people with crappy connections were bogging down the main AP customers. I also used up a lot more CPU power.
Can you tell me why you are setting it up that way Or what you are trying to accomplish? There may be a better way of doing it. |

| I was simply trying to test a new way since it should have been the quickest solution without changing a bunch of equipment out. It weren't.
As far as sr9's in RB112's I have problems with them as well, but only if I use 12v POE instead of 48v. The unit disconnects my winbox connection if I send data over the wireless, but once I put it on 48v it worked well. |

| Oh, Yes! One must always use a 48v POE. That's all I ever use. LOL, It would be great if the distributor would suggest buying the 48v POE so people don't have these problems.
Your answer was a good one. Nice idea to get around knocking customers offline, to bad it didn't work. Damn, Now I'm going to have to try it! Maybe I can get it to work. blah blah blah I know damn well I won't have time. Still it sounds like it should have worked. |

| It most definately should have. I think these old amps I have suck with newer cards. Beyond that, there are still alot of old cheap bridges on my network so I am sure some people would have had a problem.
The solution I ended up doing was setting up a 900Mhz link between two nearer sites.
My problem with this is, I am operating at a 7db fade margin. Ick. Vertically the noise floor is -45. Horizontally it is -86.
Seems to have stayed online throughout the night though. |

1 edit | Ack run for your life, AMPS!@#@!#!@#??@#@?!
I've never been a party to the whole AMP ARE ALWAYS BAD camp. Amps are not the end all be all evil in the world. Over the limit amps that just toss out a bunch of noise are evil.
To be clear, the amps in question are 800mw amps used with prism based cards and a channel filter on my 2.4ghz link not the 900mhz link.
While the extra couple of db out isn't needed, the recieve gain is. |
