| Extremely Slow Speeds and High Latency
I have Northland Cable out of Greenwood SC. I am paying $50 for 3Mbps DL and 384Kbps UL. I rarely get those speeds. The only time I attain those speeds is early in the morning, around 7:30 AM until around 2:00 in the afternoon. Once 3:00 PM rolls around, my speeds and latency times go south fast. I rarely get speeds above 300Kbps during this time. Attached is a screen shot of the tracert command I ran. I get the same results day in and day out, especially in the evening. The problem appears to be isolated to one heavily overloaded router (12.119.43.73) as the ping times skyrocket whenever this router is reached. I've called tech support countless times, only to have them run me through the pointless rebooting of the modem, check for spyware, blah blah blah crap every time, only to determine that there doesn't appear to be a problem on their end. SNR and everything else is fine. I always mention my results of the tracert command to the tech support, but they seem to not understand (which doesn't surprise me). Is there anything I can do? |

1 edit | It's plain to see the issue is between hops 3 and 4 or hop 4. Nothing YOU can do other then to get your ISP to resolve it. It's likely not enough bandwidth available a/between hops 3 and 4.
You need to get someone there to acknowledge and then address the problem.
If the problem was on your end, you'd see it on the initial hops. It's not until you're out in their network that there's a problem. |

| reply to Hazy Arc Looks like the connection between NCTV's router (12.146.226.1) and AT&T's routers is messed up. I have seen this everal times on our system. There could a number of different reasons why. As Geek said, it could the bandwidth is maxed out. Depending on how they(NCTV)connects to AT&T the connection could be bad (We run BGP with AT&T and when the BGP session is down, we get hig latensy and very high pings)
Really there is nothing you can do except to hound the crap put of your ISP. Send them screen shots like the one above. If you know of any other people on NCTV's internet service, get them to call and complain. -- If you do not think GOD is funny, take a trip to Wal-Mart and look at some of the people. |

| Thanks for the responses. I knew the problem wasn't on my end. The trick now is convincing my ISP that they have a serious problem. Looks like I'm going to be their new favorite customer. |

| reply to Hazy Arc Well after weeks of hounding my ISP because of the same problem, I have gotten nowhere. They insist nothing is wrong...what a joke! Looks like tomorrow will be the last time I call them, as I'm dropping their horrendously crappy service and going with DSL. |
