Thanks for the info. Libra

Funny though, I'd done the edit, and after being rebooted it still had the setting change I made when I pulled up the TZEDIT.

I guess the control panel deal is to set it into the registry some different way or locale.

Hey, long as it works, right?

I hope everyone using the TZEDIT.exe is following the use of the tool by (from MS article):

"Click Start, point to Settings, point to Control Panel, and then double-click Date/Time.
h. Click the Time Zone tab.
i. Select a different time zone than the (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana time zone, and then click Apply.
j. Click (GMT-08:00) Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana, and then click OK.

Note Steps i and j are required for the new changes to take effect."
(step i being any time zone and step j being your time zone)

I agree. That is also evidenced by the critical vulnerability that exists in WMP 6.4.

Yeah, they do..but it's unconfortably complicated for most people. And, why download a multi-Mb resource kit, when a 27Kb file will do?

Odd..I really think M$ wants to push as hard as possible to make people upgrade by withholding support. A rude tactic IMHO.

You'll notice the Win2k Resource Kit brings up a 404 removed...

Actually the link below shows you how to do it manually...sort of. See Method 2.

How to configure daylight saving time for the United States in 2007
»support.microsoft.com/?kbid=914387

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\ contains the actual time zone code.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation *appears* to be the time zone selected for the machine in question.

I *assume* all you need to change is the \Time Zones\, since most of us aren't moving.

Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks caffeinator See Profile! Just ran it and it appears to do the job on my Win2k Pro box. Why couldn't MS have provided a tool? One more irritation from them.

You poor thing. Well, depending on how bad you wanted to make that business call, you just might be required to interrupt your "sleep hours" or, god forbid, delay your breakfast.
When I know I will be on the phone for three hours or more, I should forego breakfast? I should forego being alert when I speak to customer service? That makes so much sense. Thank you for saying that I should willing present myself as a sacrifical lamb to some damn business that has already screwed up something badly and that I want straightened out. In the case of Dell, it took SIX MONTHS OF DELL HELL on the phone, for many hours, three or four days a week and I should just totally disrupt my circadian rhythms (badly mess with my health in other words) because I want a company to make something right that is wrong and that is their fault not mine? Well, thank for that great advice.

Thanks, caffeinator. That DOES look safe, though it's an older version (as you noted); that version should be in the older resource kits many may have.

My point was that MS should have made this much easier by just letting one download the single file instead of an entire resource kit---this just didn't make sense.

The whole DST thing is kinda silly anyway . But, like gravity, it's a law I don't like but have to follow .

There is no need to artifically manipulate time twice a year and disrupt circadian rhythms.
You figure DST will create any radar screen blimp in the "circadian rhythms" of the hundreds of thousands of us that work shift work, or swing shifts?

I cannot call customer service for a business on the East Coast ever during DST because the hours are during my sleep hours and breakfast and I don't do mornings so I am not sufficiently awake to make a business call until after breakfast and by then customer service has closed.
You poor thing. Well, depending on how bad you wanted to make that business call, you just might be required to interrupt your "sleep hours" or, god forbid, delay your breakfast.
And I suppose it just never ocurred to you that not everyone has the phenomenally important 'CRY2' gene??
Not all plants or mice have it, and, given the evidence at hand, quite possibly not all Hawaiians, either.

Why is a tool needed when it appears all that is needed is to adjust the registry accordingly?

Alas, even the official tzedits from MS that are found around the Net in standalone are NOT the latest---that is only found in the Server 2k3 Resource Kit. Since it works on all older Windows versions, THAT'S the one MS is recommending (though it probably isn't necessary) and so my point was that that's the one they should make available separately.

The older ones probably do the job fine.

headdesk? What is that? What is that smilie? I've never seen that one before, but then I use only a few common smilies even though I have a fancy smilie extension for Fx.

Earlier today, when I was out running I had two people stop me and ask me about this patch. (I've helped them in past with computer problems). They had no idea either that the Mainland was going on extended DST next year and they are unhappy also to hear this is happening because of the problem of not being able to call East Coast businesses during their business hours without inconvenience to us here. Hawaii, I think, needs to go on DST in self defense.

We don't have daylight savings. What is this time change? Never heard of it. Do I need this software update if Hawaii doesn't observer daylight savings (which all states should stop observing IMO)?
Why does this concern you if you "never heard of it" or don't have DST (which is it?)? Most people like DST as it gives more hours of daylight in the evening. Why would you need this update if Hawaii doesn't participate in DST?

"...which all states should stop observing IMO"....which is a negative opinion on something that you "never heard of" or doesn't affect you.
No one answered my question. I didn't especially need a link to an essay about how awful Daylight Savings Time is although that was ok as it is just more ammunition against it ....I already know that medically and otherwise it is a very bad idea. I don't know why anyone would like it. Who wants sunshine at 9PM and darkness at 10PM? That's nuts. I hate it when I go to visit my mother in Arkansas and have to live with light artifically ended in the evening too late and starting funny in the morning. It wasn't like that when I was growing up in Arkansas and we all managed just fine. There is no need to artifically manipulate time twice a year and disrupt circadian rhythms.

I asked what is this time change? And no one told me...that Wiki essay doesn't either ....maybe somewhere in that long article is a reference to what I asked but I didn't see it and Wiki says the article badly needs updating and cleaning up...so I ask again what is this time change this coming year? I have sort of figured out it is going to be longer than in past years? Is that correct? That will be awful for us in Hawaii. Just awful ....we all hate it when you guys go on it and can't wait for you to get off it and if that time is extended...then double UGH.

Plus, what is this Microsoft patch? It is only for those going on this NEW DST? Or what? Why is a patch needed in 2007 that wasn't needed when going on DST on the Mainland in 2006? Remember in Hawaii we don't have a bunch of news articles about DST on the Mainland. We can't even remember when you guys have it and don't...we just hate it and wish it would go away permanently as it is very disruptive of health, circadian rhythms, etc. for those who must endure it and bad for us in Hawaii for any business we have to do with the Mainland because it extends the already significant time difference so that in many instances I cannot call customer service for a business on the East Coast ever during DST because the hours are during my sleep hours and breakfast and I don't do mornings so I am not sufficiently awake to make a business call until after breakfast and by then customer service has closed.

Hi LaLuna,
I was referring to the work-around they give for unsupported OS's (I have Windows 98se). All of that is too confusing to me.

I haven't updated our XP computer yet, but when I do I will install the DST update on it.

Sincerely, Libra
Yep, I understand that now.

For what it's worth for Win98FE users, tzedit.exe and its help file, etc. are included in the Resource Kit on the Win CD... and it worked perfectly to implement the changeover to the new DST dates.

First of all, thank you DP for giving more information on this. It's given me hope.

Altermatt,
I did a search of Google and came across this site which gives a few extra steps in using tzedit.exe and also gives a link to a Microsoft ftp site that has that tool for Windows 98se. I downloaded it and scanned it with AVG and tested it with BOClean. Haven't tried using it yet. Here's the site:

»help.lockergnome.com/windows2/Wi···268.html

Sincerely, Libra

EDIT: I just used the tzedit.exe tool and it seemed to go well We'll see what happens in March. (Also, the properties of the file all reflected MS.)

Again, thank you so much DP.

Google tzedit and you should be able to find it. You can use it for unsupported systems Win9x/ME and W2K. It's very easy to use. Just run it, select your time zone if it's not already pre-selected, click Edit, and change the values to have daylight savings time start on the second Sunday in March, and end on the first Sunday in November. No other changes are needed. When you close the program the registry is updated and you're all done.
Thanks, that'll be useful..why M$ couldn't be so concise is beyond me. Oh wait..they want me to upgrade, thats right.

I'm still planning to move my main operations to a non-M$ system pretty soon though..they just refuse to support older hardware..that a lot of people use including me.

Funny, *nix supports legacy hardware, while progressing in the new.

Planned obsolescence..BAH.
