| Personally, I LOVE Skype.
I don't understand why folks have this delusion that they HAVE to use a headset and mic to use Skype. I have a large diaphragm vocal mic plugged into my computer and it's turned my PC into the best speakerphone ever: no feedback, no delay or latency issues and I can wander down the hall from the computer and folks I'm talking to have no problems hearing or understanding me (nor I them). The Skype to Skype calls are naturally clearer, but calls to POTS also sound great.
I've been using it for six months now and I love it and have no intention of getting rid of it. As a screenwriter, I learned years ago that if you have a phone number outside of the greater Los Angeles area, there's something weird and suspicious about you (unless your last film won an Oscar or your last TV show won an Emmy). SkypeIn lets me have a 310 area code dial-in number at a straight $38 a year. No additional fees, no taxes, just one payment and we're done. I also get voicemail and the past six months of free calls has been awesome.
Obviously, there are a number of folks out there who want a specific task performed by their phone service that they feel Skype doesn't do well enough for them. That's great, they're free to use whatever they want. My question is, can their preferred service provide me with unlimted long distance that has excellent sound quality to anywhere in North America PLUS provide me with a 310 area code dial-in phone number and voice mail for $53 a year!? |

| The main problem I see with Skype is the lack of 911 access...you're pretty much putting yourself in a bad situation if you don't have a backup (a cheap pay-as-you-go cell phone might work on this occasion but still not ideal).
Other than that, all this talk has me interested in switching to something like Roadrunner cable internet and ditching Earthlink. |

| reply to Desdinova Pay no attention to the ignorant. Most are just paid shills for competitors.
I've been using Skype "PC Free" for a long time now. I own several USB Skype phones, a pair of Skype Wi-Fi phones, and I use it on my PPC as well. I have never been "tied" to a desk or used a wired headset.
Call quality is superb (better than POTS here) and the price simply can't be beat. |
