Faster cleaner instant message checking

Ok there is a new URL available:

»/instantcheck/NNNNNN
for example
»/instantcheck/1
shows whether or not I have an instant message waiting.

So NNN is your usernumber.. which you can find by looking at the URL for your little business card icon or anywhere your avatar is displayed..

The (tiny) html page shows either a yellow post it note, or a flashing one, and auto-refreshes every 60 seconds. You do not have to be logged in, in fact for kicks and pleasure you can monitor someone elses inbox (not that it will be very interesting to know they do or do not have an instant message waiting form them).

this URL will be active shortly .. not right this minute

Great news... I know you wanted to implement a newer IM checker, so I'll go ahead and make the appropriate modifications in this forum's description.

Very nice Justin

Now if only could convince my win98se active desktop to allow me to completely resize the page so it was only as big as the flashing image, and possibly have the background be black? Eh beggers can't be choosers!

Do you still have to be logged into to get your messages or does this work with the desktop IM receiver? Nevermind I found the answer to my question.

I got mine this big. When the icon flashes it fills the box. I had to place it to the far edge of the right side to hide some of it though.

Thanks Justin, this is so cool.

Is there a way to have the window stay on top of other browsers? Just curious.
Also, where is the domain of the site?
I'd like to make a trusted site and avoid the Internet Explorer dialog, "Scripts are usually safe. Do you want to allow scripts to run?"

It uses the same as DSLR (www.dslreports.com). And there are alternatives in showing it.. I tend to use it in my Proxomitron filter set, so no matter where I surf, the icon pops up on my browser page.

Justin, according to your page, you have an IM.. actually, this could be cool because:

a) You can find out if someone else has an IM and

b) We could modify the old IFRAME to make it compatible with this.

Does this mean that you can use this method to check if someone has blocked you? Kinda of a neat side effect if it is...

An example of a frame is what this message is posted in now (the little box around the message). An IFRAME is what you see when you click post and the little box showing the thread pops up toward the top of the screen.

Over at ATM we're trying to script a background process to query this page and somehow get a "yes" or "no" as to whether there are message(s) waiting.

Is there any way to programmatically get this info or is it limited to physically viewing the page that the URL generates?

TIA

Well, the 'programmatically' way of getting this is currently internal. So, the page is probably perl or php based. Based on the info, it then produces one of two images.

I guess it could be made into something that can be retrieved, but that's up to Justin for now .

Thanks to TomRC I found the answer - the images for the flashing letterbox and the nonflashing one have different names in the image server. We can use this programmatically to tell whether the IM is waiting or not.

You don't need to put your user id in the field.
I clicked »/instantcheck/1 and check for IM and it brought my page up.

No. That link is an indicator for Justin's (user id: 1) IMs. All of the pictures link to /instant/ , which goes to your "im center."
