[Connectivity] Latency Issue

I called comcast, they said your modem is working fine.

I said yes but I do a tracrt and I am losing packs to the warcarft server.

they say oh, your playing a game, well sir its not our fault the game slows down your computer and we have no responsibility for that.
( I hear laughing in the back ground)

Sir whats this game called again? War of the what?

(again laughing)

Sir you should call who you got the pc from and have them help you out.

I said I built it.

Oh well thats the problem Sir.

I said I have been playing the game on this PC for 2 years with no problem untill Adelphia went to Comcast.

we cant help you Sir you connection is fine.

Modem: Terayon Cable (NDIS 5)
USB Conection
FireWall: None
AntiVirus: Norton Norton Corporate "disabled"
ISP: Adelphia / Comcast
Location: East Tennessee
All drivers and OS is updated.

Ok so first go here: »Comcast High Speed Internet FAQ »How To Get Help! Post the needed information.

This will help us inform you if your modem is fine or not.

Tracert's while useful are not always the best way to determine if your connection works. A internet router is designed to route data, responding to your ping is of little importance to them and many, including most of comacsts routers wont respond to all your pings. This give the illusion of packet loss.

As far as the unprofessional behavior goes we cant really fix that. You can look at making complaints higher up if you so choose to.

its the routing..nothing comcast can do, except play on a server geographically closer to you....

i get this kinda job once a month...some kid complaining about his connection to a server in California (im in Delaware)....routing+server side conditions=not comcast problem...

i would say lose the terayon modem....i hate those blue demonic devices!!!

Hmmm. Looks like this area hasn't been cut over to CRAN yet, based on the domain names. And it's odd that you're losing the last of 3 traceroute packets on each hop; I'd have expected to see the *'s distributed among the 3 packets for any given hop.

If you just ping your destination, does it show you a problem? Are you seeing problems elsewhere?

Look at the last hop:

17 77 ms 77 ms * mdf001c7613r0004-gig-12-1.lax1.attens.net [12.129.193.246]

He's already off the comcast network. So it's NOT a cran conversion problem, and/or if cran is in place it's not that problem either because the tracert by that point is already off the comcast network. There is nothing a comcast upper tier nor engineering can do about that.

Right, he is making it off the Adelphia/Comcast network, but every hop along the path except one is showing some packet loss, including ones on AT&T, and we don't see the final hop, most likely because he hits a firewall, and so don't know if there's packet loss all the way through. And the same firewall seems to be blocking pings as well, at least for me.

So I'd look to see if you're having similar issues with other sites, where pinging/traceroutes can make it to your final destination to ease troubleshooting.

While I won't say it's 100% normal, I have seen it happen before without there being any true packet loss.

I started using pingploter

and every IP I went to I lose packs at every hop.
I put in IPs that are local and same result.

could it be my modem?

I am at work now and I wrote down my modems IP and the IP I had when I left the house.

when I ping it I start losing packs when i get to adelphia's network, can I use this as anyway to troubleshoot?

I just pinged your gateway for about 5 minutes and got virtually no packet loss, so if you are truly getting packet loss then it is likely between you and the head end. I suggest you run the same ping as I did and see how much Packet loss you get there. Also might run it to comcast.net just for the heck of it.
I also ran a traceroute and noticed that there is a really bad jump in latency once you hit Adelphia's network.

Just a side note, it seems that the latency is getting worse and worse as I post this. Pinging over 250 ms at the moment. Could be a capacity problem. Fun!

my modems IP and the IP I have assigned is not the same.
should it be?

Would my modem cause this pack loss at every hop?

someone please give me some advice, do I need to reformat my hard drive and go back from scratch?

I changed out my modem to a Motorola 5100 series and get the same pack lose

It's not your modem. It's Comcast. I've had Adelphia HSI for over 2 years. The only problem I ever had was a modem that went bad. Since the conversion to comcast started 3 months ago I've had latency issues. I've had technicians out to check my equipment and connections. The only thing they found wrong is my neighborhood has a very low return level. I've been playing UNREAL for years and Battlefield2 for over a year. I haven't been able to play for 2 months now because of high ping rates. I've been paying for Premium service but I am about to switch to Bellsouth unless I can get back to where I was.

Not at the moment. Our changeover to comcast from adelphia is not finished yet.

The ip provided to your modem and the ip that you see on your computer or router will never be the same. Comcast provides different numbers for each device.

The tracert tells a lot.
It tells you the time delay between each router as your packets find the destination. It gives you an incremental time not a difference. One thing I notice with Comcast is that there packets hit multiple routers which is very in-efficient from a latency stance.
My view is that they have sacrificed latency in giving greater bandwidth. To accomplish this they have a large number of routers to distribute the heavy load.
Compounding the issue is that they probably have one central NOC in the middle of the USA. Instead of having 3 or more.

Problem solved. The adelphia technician checked the configuration file they sent to my modem and said it was not done correctly. He sent a new config file to my modem and restarted it. Now my downloads are where they should be and the pings are where I remember them. I'm gaming again. It only took 3 months though.
