| You're going to get many opinions. There really is no "best" AV software - only what works best for you. I'd recommend trailing some of the other AV packages available and see which one you like best. You might review the last AV Poll to see where you might want to start. »AntiVirus Poll 2006 -- Team Discovery

| reply to Loer9 There is no "best", it's all a matter of personal opinion and what works well on your system. Everyone thinks the AV they use is the "best".
Follow mers2 's advice and trial some for yourself and see what works best for you. The most popular/well known are indicated here:

| reply to Loer9 Hi fancy seeing you in here lol !
I've been very happily using AntiVir ( Avira ) for some time now, and recently upgraded to Premium which has AS too. It has received top marks in 2 recent AV tests and is very light to run.
Also it is more often than not, ahead of most other vendors in getting hold of Malware and releasing the Defs for them, and has very few FP's i've found.
Highly recommended !

Though what REALLY works for you has 2 factors involved. Whether it messes up your computer and how effective at detecting threats it is. Somewhere you'll find peace LOL (-:

1 edit | reply to Loer9 As as already been mentioned, there's no "best" AV software. I personally use and like NOD32 because it runs smoothly on my computer, but this doesn't necessarily mean that it runs smoothly on your computer, too. Take a look at the above-mentioned AntiVirus Poll 2006 and download a couple of trial versions. Only then will you be able to decide for yourself what AV software best suits your needs. Saying that the program xyz is "best" is rubbish; only you yourself can decide what's best. |

| reply to Loer9 Hehe...yep
The best posts here are the ones that suggest there is no 'best'. I agree with the suggestions to check out the poll, perhaps try a few of the better rated apps, and decide what best suits your needs.
Funny how these threads always tend to turn into yet another three pages of different and personal opinions...that pretty much speaks for itself. -- I had a life once.....now I have a Computer and a Modem. |

| reply to Loer9 It is a personal preference, I work on a lot of machines, Panda works best for me. When a computer is screwed I use it to bring it back. I recommend it especially to my clients who deny there on porn sites all the time. The free trials bail me out all the time when onsite. My biggest dilemma is it does so well it cuts into my revenue stream. When I have a machine that's screwed beyond booting into windows real mode, I use avast pro which will install in safe mode and do a virus scan in dos mode on a reboot. |

| reply to Loer9 Check out the link IBK put up av-comparatives.org and check out the comparatives. If you choose one that had an advanced plus rating like Antivir, Nod32 etc. you will be in good shape. Or at least one that had an advanced rating. Like some others have said there is no best just go with what works for you and do some research on how they compare before jumping in. |

| reply to Loer9 I went years without using AV programs and had no problems. However my kids are getting older, so ...
Anyway, I settled on Avast because I have mix of systems at home (MCE, XP64, Vista) and it works on all (AVG wouldn't run on a 64 bit system). It's highly configurable and doesn't seem to get in the way. I also like the tray animation that kicks in when it is scanning. |

| There is absolutely nothing wrong with AVG. While detections aren't the very best - not quite as good as KAV or AntiVir it's still quite good for free. Better than many paid A/V's, as is Avast and AntiVir, and if you augment it with online scans, alternating between Kasperski online and Trend Micro housecall then you covered every bit as good as the best paid A/V as resident on your system. Also consider how light AVG and a few others are on your systems resources and it's a great app to run on an slightly aging system with 1 gig or less of memory - especially if if you do a little gaming. |
